Hey guys , my 03 mountain has about 3000 km on it and has been burning oil at about a litre every third trip. Someone told me that it may be sucking oil into the airbox at high rpm and burning it.
Anybody have the same problem?? Three of my buddies have rx1's and they have never burned any oil ever. I'm still under warranty for a few months so if it may be an engine problem I want to get it dealt with soon.
I started putting synthethic in it the last couple of times as top up even though the KM's are still pretty low. This may not be helping maybe??
Thanks guys

Rings! Get it back to the dealer while it's still under warranty.
Yes what MW says they changed the rings in the 04 models to fix this very problem.

Thanks guys, I was hoping it wasn't that but I guess it's better while under warranty. I was asking the dealer about tit and they never mentioned anything about rings to me. They tryed to tell me that the synthetic oil could be the problem because of the low KM's. But now that i'm better informed I will be approaching them a little different.
Thanks agian

This subject has been debated and talked about for years. I finally received the answer this week. There is a tech bulletin out that addresses this issue. I will get the number and post as soon as my dealer opens. I think this is recent news because my local dealer did not know anything about it and know one on this site has said anything. Here you go, the reason we are burning/using oil is because these are bike engines and they do not run hot enough. Yamaha's answer is to run ring-free and the problem goes away. Apparently there is some sort of build-up and causes the rings/seals to leak, thus passing oil. I know they changed the rings in the next model year. I have the 4 year warranty and Yamaha did not want to touch my sled. I am using 1 quart per 150 miles, totally unacceptable.

I don't buy that one, I ran a temp gauge on both my RX-1 and Warrior and they didn't run any colder than any of my street bikes. Also, it appears to be the guys that are running the sh!t out of their sleds that seem to be the majority having oil burning issues. IMHO I believe it is in fact a ring sealing issue .Boston RX1 said:Here you go, the reason we are burning/using oil is because these are bike engines and they do not run hot enough.
Both mine and my dad's 03 go through more oil when we run high speeds for a long time, as opposed to the twisty trails, but nowhere near the consumption others have seen, we probly go through 1 quart to every 600 miles or so. Both sleds were broken in at WOT from mile 0.
I think the main difference is that the sleds operate at constant high rpm as compared to the bike which varies rpm all the time by shifting and also cruises at a lower rpm. IMO

The problem that starts the whole thing is crankcase ventilation. You'll note that the 06's have a totally changed vent box. When a little bit of oil escaped through the breather into the intake, that little bit of oil burns and gets stuck in the rings. When the rings get stuck, you get blowby, which means more pressure in the crankcase for more oil blowing out the vent, AND you get oil escaping right past the rings.
Ringfree/seafoam/etc., works because it prevents the rings from getting stuck by burned oil.
The better solution is to increase crankcase ventilation and improve the effectiveness of the oil separator.

OK, LB, can you give me directions on how to do that?

Will a crankcase filter from any local auto parts store help, or will I just dumping oil into the engine compartment?

Here's an idea, I didn't look at it too closely, but might be worth considering;

oil?
I thought I read somewhere about a filter that accomplished what LB is saying. That's why I was asking about the crankcase ventilation. I think that the High RPM on lakes and rivers are causing exactly what LB says but the changing of the rings also seems to have solved the problem.
I still think it is unacceptable as the R1 motor doesn't redline til 14000RPM and they don't burn oil!
Has anyone had their dealer replace the rings in there 03 under warranty for this issue?? And does anybody with an 04 or newer have the same problem?? I don't drive the #*$&@ out of my sled but do travel on alot of lakes and rivers at higher speeds and this really annoys me having to put oil in the sled all the time.

You don't want to just swap for a filter. Two problems with just a filter; 1: oil will go right through it, 2: the airbox is under vacuum, you really want to SUCK the gases out of the crankshaft as hard as you can.

I've said this before and I'll say it again. On my 04 Warrior I noticed that if I checked the oil at the start of a trip after warm up that it would be a little low on the dip stick, so I would add 4-8 0unces of oil, we would do a 200 -300 mile trip. The next day the same thing, start up, warm up, check the oil, a little low, add 4-8 ounces.
I than decided to try something different, at the end of a day of riding I would check the oil level. To my surprize the level was full. I continued to check my oil level this way at the end of the day, and I never added oil again!!!
Could the problem be that we where not getting an accurate reading in the morning after warm up and than adding excessive oil which was than burning off?
I will continue to check my oil at the end of a days riding.

I would agree that I was not checking the oil properly, but when the oil light comes on and indicates that the oil is low, I don't care how you check it, you need oil. I think the Ring-Free is the answer. As long as I know what to do, fine. It was not knowing that was the problem.
