Good feedback so far guys. I added a poll. I thought it would be interesting to see the results.

Has anyone tried thicker oil? Is there an oil without friction inhibators that is maybe a 20-50? It would be harder to start when cold, but maybe it would thin out as much?

Almost 2k on my Rx (2 other sleds to play with) The only oil used so far was about 6oz when it was up-side down on a hill for 10min. took 5 tries to get it started again.

I have some 15-40 iam going to try next and it isn't synthetic. I can't see spending the extra money at the rate I am going through it and the syn. burns just as fast if not more.
Ray how do you vent your breather?

I'm not burning oil but was TOLD today about a guy that was burning oil. He used Ring Free fuel additive and fixed the problem. Don't shoot the messenger here, as I am only passing on what I heard. I don't know much about the product, but the guy used 1 container for a tank full. Anyone know about this product? Could some of these problems be carbon build up on the rings creating blow by?

Rings?

You would think the exhaust would smoke and smell more. I can't see any difference between mine and others that aren't burning oil. That oil is going somewhere

Uncle Buck,

All I did for the breather is put a small air filter looking thing in the hose where it used to hook to the airbox.

That's what I did. I do get oil film where it exits, but not quarts worth!!

The guy I'm posting about had oil in his stock airbox foam, so it was most likely comming from his crankcase vent hose

Same here.

BBY did a post about re-routing the breather, but I didn't fully understand what he did.

I'm certainly no expert as far as what's needed for properly venting the crank case, but I've often wondered why Yamaha didn't run the vent line into the oil tank (it would obviously need some sort of vent to atmosphere). This would at least trap oil where it could be re-used.
Just a thought for whatever it's worth.

HEY GUYS-
Just a bit of info to put the oil use into perspective-
if you ran your rx-1 engine at 6000 rpms for 1 mile
and each time a cylinder fired it used 1 drop of oil,do you know it would go through 6.3 qts in a mile?

It is amazing that more oil isn't burned, however right now according to the poll, 64% say they don't use ANY oil!

I have a 03 RX-1M. I use Cheveron 5w-30 and am usuing 1/2 quart per ride (40-60 miles). I have about 1500 miles on it.

I have an 03 RX-1 with 4400 miles on it from last year. I have not done any riding this year, hope to get out before the season is over! I used approx. 1.25 qts total. Now according to what I have learned on this forum, I may have been overfilling it since I maintained the oil level right up to or even a liitle above the full mark. I broke the engine in exactly the same way I have done every 4 cylinder street bike I've owned which is to go easy for the first 100 miles then begin to give it bursts of acceleration and vary the engine speed for the first 500 miles. The first oil and filter change was at 400 miles, second change at 1600 mi., third oil change at 2600 mi., fourth oil change at 4400 mi. so the guts of this engine are clean. I've used the 5-30w Yamalube and will be switching to either 10-30W or 5-40W amsoil. I wouldn't mind if it used 1 qt in 2000 - 4000 miles but the oil usage some people are seeing is scary! Its hard to say what is causing the high oil consumption: poorly sealing rings resulting in blow-by, excessive oil being slung onto the cylinder walls which overwhelms the oil control ring or coming through the valve seals. I've talked to many Yamaha techs, they all claim that 1 qt. in 1000 miles is normal, they see that amount of oil consumption on the Yamaha watercraft which uses the same engine. 1 qt. in a 1000 mi. seems very high to me!

1 qt IN 1000 MILES IS ONLY A DROP PER MILE!!
DIVIDE THAT BY 4 CYLINDERS AND WERE TALKING 1/4 DROP PER CYLINDER-NOT TOO BAD EH?
BY THE WAY -RX1JIM -FEEL LIKE RIDIN IN CANADA WITH ME?
