ont, can
sled locked up today, 5000kms, 3000 miles, if its the drive axle bearings, should i not get more than that mileage from them? what a poff, and worse i had to get towed by a cat

how did you tow a locked up track sled.
I use a pick to remove the outer seal on my bearings and pump in grease each season.
My 05 and 08 both were getting "dry" after 2000 miles so i was glad i checked them.
I was a little po'd they were in need of grease after 2k.

X2 on pulling the seal and checking the driveshaft bearing and jackshaft bearing. My older sleds (1999 and 2000 Vmax) bearing grease looked like red mud. Cleaned with brake cleaner and low pressure comp air, regreased with needle injector, and they looked good after the last trip. Use LOW pressure air to avoid blowing the seal out of the other side.

5K from 2 winters or 8K/season is not out of the ordinary. ..you can re-grease one time or two to extend that or just to assure it won't act on you. I don't clean/greese this thing more than once... i just change it..so easy it is. This guy lives in a bad place, too long waiting then it will fight you to stay there... if your Tork bit don't break.

had to double back to the cottage to get a sleigh to put under the track, toasted the belt in the cat $120, dealer says there a maintenance item should be greased yearly, there sealed bearings for -----sake, so probably a $200 bill all for some cheap bearings :die

well it wasn't the spedo side, it was the bearing in the chaincase, smashed the case itself $200. now i'm really mad that a bearing in the oil of the chaincase would seize at 5000k 3000miles

That bearing does not run in oil .there is a seal between the case and the bearing some oil gets past the seal but not much .These are crapy bearings .

ok so yamaha knows all about these bearings but is not willing to do anything about them. anyone believe a small claims court would be successful to recoup the cost? there is no mention of a ny maintenance in the owners manual, nor any follow up bulletin to owners of these machines, yes i bought mine new

I am pretty sure they have the warranty policy air tight . If you were in the US it might be worth a shot . If you try it let us know how it goes .

It is a maintainance item. No manufacturer warranties bearings. You would be wasting the courts time. I check mine about twice a season, as we ride the ditches, and road salt ruins $hit. I have never had one fail, but I repack once, then replace. Seems alot of peple want sleds that run forever wih no pre trip inspection or maintainance, an complain when they don't run forever. They are bearings that run in hi moisture, hi temp, and $hity conditions. They fail check them more often, and take care of your sled. Maxdlx

No I am jut tired of people complaining about normal maintaince stuff that isn;t yamahas resposibilty. The way I see it you have 2 choices, check it out more closely yourself, or have a dealer check it, and fix it before it breaks. Or don't bitch and complain about Yamaha when it does fail. It a bearing, bearings fail. Some at 3000 miles some at 9000 miles. It not yamahas fault so don't blame them. It is your sled take care of it. Maxdlx

You're usually a pretty level headed guy DLX, but your response was inappropriate IMO. My bearings went at 3600 and I got them covered under my YES warranty.

Back in the early 90's, Polaris bearings usually went around 4000 miles. So, most people would change them. You say they go 3000...or they go 9000.....so what should we do? Change them every year or ???

I could go on and on but don't want to waste my time....you don't like reading about people complaining about their sleds, then don't read or respond to posts then....pretty simple. Being a VIP Member doesn't give you the right to rip on people.

He wanted to take Yamaha to small claims over a bearing failure. It isn't a wide spread failure, some go some don't. I check mine every time I have the sled apart. You hear way to much complaining on here about guys wanting every little thing covered by Yamaha. Maybe he jammed something in the seal ridding, and the bearing got water in it, maybe the bearing got some road grime in it and failed. It is a 3 year old sled, time alone could have dried the bearing out, how long can Yamaha be held responsible. I just don't understand why some think these sleds should run forever or yamaha should fix them.

max i've been riding yamaha's for 25 years, never had a bearing go, never had anyone tell me to grease a sealed bearing. yamaha knows there is a problem with the bearings or they wouldn't have instructed the dealers to grease them, which by the way the dealer never passed that important little piece of info onto me. that little $30 bearing cost me $800 in repair bills if you think i'm pissed your right.
