I replacing the hyfax on my 05, waiting for the snow. When I pulled the skid, I notice all the idler wheels bearings are frozen & it does not look like the bearings are replaceable. I was surprised, the sled only has about 2500 miles. The wheels look fine & not wore at all. Any ideas why the bearings would seize?

Idler neglect
The neglect & design? That is what I trying to figure out, how to end the neglect and what are better design solutions?

Get the spoked wheels from the Yamaha book. Port Yamaha has great deals on them and no tax if your out of state (Wisconsin). The bearings are replaceable and they look hot in the colors. I have them on 3 sleds and several 1000 miles on each skid and no problems.

The reason why I said neglect is that a lot of folk fail to service the bearings by popping the seals off, cleaning them out with solvent and re-greasing them. I do it at the end of the riding season so that trapped water in the bearings won't cause the bearings to rust during the off season.
As for design, the Yammy stock wheels of late have a wheel and bearing combo in which you cannot service them due their encapsulated design. Yamaha finally is coming out with redesigned idler wheels whereby the bearings can be serviced/replaced.
There have been many threads posted regarding replacing the stock wheels with aftermarket wheels and other OEMs, which can add benefits of longer slider wear.
I did a quick search here using the "Search" function at the top of the page and posted a few links for ya. You will see that many of us are quite unhappy with the older design of the wheels, as well as poor stock slider wear. Happy reading.

idler options
Thanks, looks like there is a lot of good material here and a few good options.

i run polaris wheels, but the standoffs need to be machined back a couple of thousandths. replacabvle bearings and the seals have more room to be removed

Im running polaris wheels as well. The bearings are very cheap for them.I was getting 10 at a time for around $2.00 a bearing.Allthough if you grease them each season they last a long time.I use synthetic grease with good results.
If I remember correctly my stock yamaha wheels.... you cant get the seals out to pack them. The only way to get any grease in would be a needle greaser.I know they started flying off at 500 miles on my sled and thats when I changed them out.

Can someone help me figure out how in the heck to replace the bearings on my 03? It seems I need a puller but then how do I get a bearing back on the shaft? I am looking at replacing one of the upper, little wheels and one of the smaller inner. I was able to remove the wheels but not the bearings.

Doesn't it have a locking screw on that one? If not, you can use a 3 jaw puller from an auto store, or maybe even cut it off.
To mount the new ones on, clean up the shaft with some sandpaper and put antiseize on. That should do it.

just emory the shaft a bit so it is smooth. antiseize might help for next time but when i install them i usually drive them on with a socket and a hammer. i also leave them on a furnace grate so the bearing expands a bit.

I just replaced 6 wheels in my 03 skid. I had a spare skid out of a 97 Vmax 500. The bearings will come out of the wheel, there is a retainer clip on one side, than remove bearing. Getting the whole wheel and bearing together can be hard. You can try heating the inner race of bearing than hammer off shaft. alot depends on what part is still good Bearing or wheel. Most of my cases have been the wheel so I uaually replace both at the same time. Good luck
