noticed this week that my speedometer reading's are jumping all over the place. for example when i'm doing 60 it will jump back to say 40 than back to 60 etc.... i even noticed while it's sitting still idling it goes up and down. anybody else seen this? thanks

OK, here's the deal. Before you ride the sled again, check the left side driveshaft bearing undernieth the clutch. When the speedo starts messing up its usually because the sensor is getting pounded by the driveshaft as the bearing begins to fail. FIX THIS IMMEDIATELY or it could cost you $$$ and downtime. It's a cheep bearing, but very prone to failure on the RX1's.

How many miles on your 05???

i have 2900 miles, thank's for the help guy's. why would the speedo read while it's sitting idle?

hey thanks guy's, sometimes it's the most obvious thing's that get overlooked. i went out to check the plug and i think it might of been the problem. i only rode it around in the yard, and it seem's like it's working. plus it doesn't read while idleing.

Ditto on the loose plug. Had same issue.
I would still every year ..Pull out the seal of that bearing wash out the mud and rust and water and repack it good with a good grease use the same seal! I had 2,800 miles on my Rage and that bearing was DRY all that was left was hard lumpy and there was an orange color to everything inside..no sign of any grease...the jackshaft bearing was fine still moist with grease and color to it.

I ahve about the same mileage and I am heading out on a long trip next week.

What's involved in inspecting that drive axle bearing?

I am curious. I bought a needle greaser just in case but I am leary of taking the seal off. Does it go back on OK?

use some eyeglass screw driver and use the small flat pointy one on the set and it will pop right out if you push then pry from the outer diameter...wash out the bearing with starting fluid since this cuts the grease the best, then blow out all the old grease(if any)and repeat this 3-4 times then use w-d40 the last time then push a good quality synthetic high temp grease with your thumbs...push seal in with alittle extra grease on bearing work the seal around the outer edge it will pop right in! Just be careful not to bend the framework of the seal ..the center is metal with rubber on the od and id. I would do this every year if I were you!! ;)!

Thanks guys....did both last night. I found the drive axle bearing MUCH easier to do than the jack shaft. Seemed like the seal came off easier. Pretty easy to do.

If you go through the trouble of pulling it out every year, why don't you just change it? It doesn't cost much...

because its no trouble at all takes only a few minutes ...if there were a grease fitting there like polaris and ski-doo I'd grease it twice a year at least, or every 1000 miles so since theres not one I just add grease its a no brainer why replace it, Thats ALOT more work!!

If it ain't broke don't replace it.

I have doing that procedure on my Yamaha's for years and have never had a failure. I now have 8737 miles on my 05 RX-1 and will check these bearing before my next ride---it is soooo easy.
