Hello All,
Happy New Year! After 7200 miles on my stock and original starter, I may need a replacement. It was taken apart last year after one of the bolts came loose but everything inside looked good and I finished off the season. This year I believe a brush is sticking and will investigate further. What exactly is the difference between my stock starter and the "updated" starter Yamaha apparently introduced at a later date? Also, do you guys know of any after market starters with better than OEM pricing / reliability? Or know of any starter rebuilders if the stock '07 starter is even worth rebuilding? Any input or leads regarding this is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Bring on the snow already!!!!

Differance=Loctite!

Wont find a better starter so yes worth rebuilding it.Probably just need new brushes which can be bought at anyplace that rebuilds alternators.I know my local ACE hardware also carries a assortment.One thing to be careful of is that the starter isnt inadvertently running all the time.That will wear the brushes out very quickly.It happens and there is a light kit sold if I remember right to indicate that issue.

cannondale27 are you serious? The only difference between the original starter and the new part number for updated starter is loctite? Why would they change p/n? My tech also says the armature's epoxy coating is cracking and the wiring shows signs of having been hot. His concern is if the magnets have incurred any damage as well, and after his 20+ years as a technician (best reputation in this area) he doesn't feel comfortable just putting new brushes in it and signing his name to it. He is suggesting I replace with an aftermarket Kimpex starter for about $160, less than half price of a new Yamaha starter. I'm considering but just don't have any feedback for Kimpex at this point.
