4th starter going in now

Thanks, but I don't have my sled back yet. Called dealer for update yesterday and they said that the Yamaha rep wants to put a 2010 Phazer starter in the sled instead and one is being shipped from Japan. Don't know what the difference is, but if they haven't figured out what's causing them to burn up then what difference will an '10' starter have over an '07', '08', or '09'? I asked my husband if it occured to him the dealer might be snowing us to borrow more time? I can't believe there aren't any '10' starters in the states. Not to mention that we live in mid-Michigan and the warm temps are melting what little snow we have. Yamaha wants the dealer to test drive my sled for 10-20 miles and there isn't gonna be enough snow to do that without burning up my hyfax. Sheesh! I leave in 6 days on a big annual trip and I'm really sweatin' getting my sled back on time, and working! :rocks:

Look for a demo to take instead so you don't miss your trip.

I feel your pain, but the 2010 starter is different, prolly jus the make of it more than anything. I'm on my second starter. Mine fell apart, they did not lock-tite any of the bolts and it literally fell apart.

FYI, buy a starter on Ebay, they are like $80-90 (Yamaha charges $380). Then follow the posted instructions here on how to remove/replace yours. Alot less pain and you learn how to save $150 on oil changes ;).

If yamaha had not stepped in on my account I would have paid $1100 for a new starter and labor. I had a couple other minor things included to the bill but still $1000 for a starter replacement is ludicrous. $80-90 and some of my time is much easier on the wallet.

SnowFlake12,
Get ahold of rockmeister he wants to give you a STARTER SAVER to test on your fixed sled, you dont have to have the sled as it will be easy for you to install then you will know the next time your starter sticks on. He will be comming back through your area on Sunday or Monday...... meet up with him to be a field tester for the STARTER SAVER......Or PM me.

Found out there is no lemon law on sleds or any other recreational vehicle in MI. Forgot to post that yesterday. My bad. Talked to the attorney the other night and he said we have a strong case (3 starters in less than a year). He suggested we wait to see if Yamaha and the dealer can get her fixed this time around and if it dies on me again then we'll file suit. We're not asking for a ton of money or anything. We just want a properly working sled. We want to stick with Yamaha because we truly believe in their quality. We just got a dud with this one. :rocks:

also should have told you that it is only two wires to connect to your sled and its hooked up.......next time the starter sticks on the red bright LED will continnually flash as long as the starter is running....... Starter turns off as normal the light is not on.

I'm definately interested, but hasn't Rock left for the U.P. already? We live just 8 miles off I-69 Durand exit (if you check the map out) and would be easy to hook up with if he's passing by. It certainly can't hurt anything by hooking it up to my sled, and the warning of the starter sticking would be welcomed.

yes he is up there already but could meet him on the way back...... if I had on with me i would meet you as I am on my way in 10 minuets to go to Gaylord........... my cell is 260-701-9033 text me your number an I will forward to Rockmeister....... then maybe you can meet up on his way south....

Sorry I missed your message Friday. I rely on my computer at work to check everything cause the PC at home is busted. By the time this came in I was gone for the day. May give you a holler anyway and pay to have it shipped to me. Would that be cool with Rock &/or you?
Sled is supposed to be dropped off by dealer tomorrow if it didn't die on them during their test drive. I leave Wednesday for the U.P. so it wouldn't be until after I'm back. Let me know. Thanks!

I will make sure rock sees this........
Just back from north and wanted to let you and Rock know that when I got my sled back last Tuesday the dealer, per Yamaha, had installed an idiot light on my sled to indicate when the starter was running. It's just like you guys described your Starter Saver: a small light linked to the sled by 2 wires. When I start my sled it comes on, then immediately shuts off, but should the starter come on while riding it would come on again so I know to shut her down before any damage is done. Don't know if you or Rock have already put up a post under General Phazer talk to advertise the Starter Saver, but it gave me peace of mind having it on my sled. I wish Rock luck putting them out. It's a great idea, and in my mind a necessity knowing what a problem these Phazer starters are. Thanks again and good luck!
