Hey folks...
well, it's another winter... this one was slow starting down here in New Brunswick but we finally got a good base ... so far... it's been mild.. freezing... mild... freezing and I have noticed that my Venture mp more often that not , on cold days will not start...turn the key the fuel pump kicks in(had the load relay changed to solid state).. no click ... no nothing...when it warms up outside it will start to click and then it will start... so I tracked down the starter relay, I am assuming, put you hand on it for about 20 seconds and it will start...I can only guess that it picked up a bit of moisture with the extreme differences in temperature , it freezes and viola!!... a no go..anyone have any issues such as this in their travels..?...should I just get a new relay..?... is there a 'solid state' replacement relay..?..Thanx in advance..

I won't guess, he who knows all is probably out dropping his antlers ... but he is never far away, thankfully.

You rang?
Sounds like the starter relay/solenoid. It's located right in front of the fuse box. It's where the big red wire goes to from the battery. When it doesn't start, try jumping the two posts. If it starts, there's your answer.
By the way, it should have been the fuel pump relay that you should have replaced with the red solid state one instead of the load control relay. All that does is turn on lights and stuff once sled is running.

Am I that predictable?
I just want to add that it is quite possible the solenoid has an intermittent issue. My son's Phazer had that. Sometimes just continuously trying to engage the starter by flicking the key it may work eventually. If moisture did get in, then it may never work when frozen. Either way, it should be replaced.

yep... I found it ... and yes... it was the fuel pump relay indeed..I took the relay off the sled... brought it inside... turned it upside down in front of the electric heater... dialectic grease and re-installed... it fired up... but this morning in the cold... same issue.. I will order a new relay...seems to me that that starter relay is much the same on any Yamaha with electric start..in appearance anyway..Thanx again..

It's supposedly moisture that gets inside and stays there or the return spring is too stiff in the cold. No matter, the solid state one will permanently fix it.
