08 nytro, scary first ride

So I just went on my first ride, and I have to say it was scary to say the least. Please keep in mind that I am a total Yamaha guy (I got a R6, 08 Grizzly, and 09 wr450f) so it was only natural to get a Nytro, but the darting and pretty much an uncontrollable sled was a huge disappointment. I am not giving up, I want to fix this issue, I know I can shorten the front strap (btw how is that done?) but the main question I have is this,
should I go the the snow tracker (aggresive or semi)
should I go with 4.5 studboy deuce wear bars
or replace the whole ski, but to what? simmons, or ski doo pilots or maybe this new split rail ski? Thank you

I don't own one but I ride with someone that does. They take some tuning to get it to your liking. But once you do they are a blast to ride, although a nytro is a sled that you have to ride unlike an old proaction sled that is like a slot car. From what I have read the stock ski's are garbage. My Buddy switched to studboy shaper bars. Here is a tuning page that might help and I would suggest doing some research on the site cause the reading goes on for days.

Best of luck and Cheers ;)!

I also have an 08 nytro RTX.

Just a few suggestions on how to set up your sled (this is my set up).
Front shocks at 55 psi, had stock skis with duece bars (good) just went to 5.7 pilots with modified yamaha rubbers reversed in the cradle (much better to great) front limiter strap up one hole and I did the a-arm shave and oft relocate mods.
Night and day difference and now I can hang with my buddies XPs. Do a search as all of these setting/mods are available within this forum.

By the way, 5' 11", 260 lbs aggressive ditch banging and trail rider.

Riverrunner, could you post a link to your tuning chart? I would like to look at a copy I can print off so I can read it better

Thanks Dan

I'm guessing that you bought a used sled?

Before spending money on carbides and skis and such, check how loose the front end is. The bushings on your A arms could be shot, balljoints too. Once you get that figured out, do an alignment of your skis so they are toed out 1/4 to 1/2 inch.

its an 08, but only 700 miles, do you think it would be an issue with the ball joints and such at such low milege?

If you are talking about your sled wanting to stay in someone elses ski tracks thats darting or tracking...
Get the duce wear carbides problem will go away. Had the same issue on all of my yamaha's with these ski's put duallys on and tracking or "darting" was gone. You may want to check the air psi for many riding style adjustments
For what its worth I put duallys on before my sleds have 1 mile on them. Thats how confident I am with them. IMHO.

Didn't read all the posts but here is my set up:

08 RTX
-220 lb rider
-144 studs
-aggressive trail riding
-front strap pulled in 1
-rear strap full out
-center spring way loose, I can see 4 or 5 threads.
-I can not remember for sure but I want to say, rear shock is like 7 clicks out for both rebound and compression.
-Sly Dog RACE skis ( Race skis are thicker than the trail ones)
-8" Bergstrom Triple points
-3/8 inch ski saver
-3/8 inch shim under the rear of the ski mount rubber
- 1/8 inch toe out
- 68 PSI in the Floats

I was exactly like you when I got my sled. It was like wrestling a Gorilla. Best thing you could ever do is get an aftermarket ski. Pilots are cheapest probably.

Rear read read, there is a TON of info here. After one ride, I had my Nytro set up very well. I LOVE it now. After my very first ride, before I changed things up, I was ready to sell it after 50 miles. Now, I plan on keeping it for a long time.

TLDR: get new skis and make sure you put a 3/8" shim ( any plastic) under the rear of the ski mount rubber. This will stop some of the darting.

thanks to all, I guess its time to start the mods, btw has yamaha had any law suites or some injuries due to this poor set up? Just wondering why all these mods are neccessary in the first place. All my other yamahas are stock, so this is something new (not used to spend money on an already expensive machine) but on the other hand it might be fun setting it up

You make avery good point. The first year I had my 08, I asked the same questions. How can they produce a sled with so many design flaws? I know some will claim there is nothing wrong with the 08's :o| I beg to differ.
I heard this morning that Cat has recalled thousands of sleds, the first thought in my mind was how come there were no official recalls of my Nytro.I ackowledge that with mods, the Nytro is a blast to ride, just didn't want to have to do so much to get to where we are today.
Sorry about the rant :jump:

DGZRT pm me your email and I will send it to you! I can't post a link to it but I can email you. I think I found it somewhere on the site wonder if the tech section has it?

KrysFly,
don't be in a hurry to tighten the limiter! this increases ski pressure and darting. I've ridden a nytro with shaper bars and felt like it hated me and was trying to eject me! Dual carbides are good but for me, I find them to push too much in the corners, sacrificing my confidencen and ability to keep a safe line.
I shimmed my stock skis for free and found some relief. New skis are expensive but thats your call. You mey consider "dartless" this seems like the best fix for the money. I hav'nt used them but there are guys here that swear by them.
