Recently had heat exchanger replaced on my 08 Nytro. Had a local shop replace heat exchanger and track, due to stud ripping through it. Local shop, good reputable mechanic fixed it correctly.....very labor intensive. It seems now, that through riding, as it heats up, pushes coolant into the overflow, then never sucks it back in as it gets back to normal temps. The overflow then pushes out the excess, and by about 100 to 125 miles, not enough coolant in radiator to keep it cool. Fan is wotking as it should. I know this is a lot of info, but what could be the problem. Sam

Needs a head gasket. I beat around the bush on mine that did the same thing. In the end I should have pulled the engine and done much sooner. Have the head plained when you have it off.

Wasn't overheating before. only ran a short time when the heat exchanger went. think it should be related. could it have heated up enough in that time to warp the head? I read your previous thread. Sam

Possibly a stuck thermostat. Check to see if the tunnel heat exchanger is getting hot after warmup to make sure the coolant is circulating.

Hoping it is the thermostat. I read 1975FA's thread. I don't heat up until about 100 miles, then the overflow overflows. Not pulling coolant back in. Don't think it got that hot to hurt the head or head gasket, would like to rule out obvious things. Spent a ton of $ on the whole heat exchanger repair, track, and misc parts. i will have to pull the engine out myself this time if I need to.

Sure sounds like a head gasket to me...doesn't take much to damage a head or the gasket........just saying

Won't a Nytro shut off if it gets too hot, before causing any damage?

only if the engine is at idle.

What kind of conditions are you riding in? I've had my temp light on many times in crap snow conditions. Have you asked your mechanic what he thinks since he did the work on it?? Seems weird that its a head gasket if it takes 100-125 miles for the problem to occur but it could be. Is it bled properly?? Start simple try the thermostat and put a temp guage on it while your at it so you can monitor what its doing, probably the best thing I've done to the sled. My light comes on a 212 by the way, ran 165-175 all day today, this pic was taken after idleing for about 3 minutes and then loading on the trailer.

Head gasket can cause this issue for sure, if you ripped a stud through the cooler it would drain the coolant and the engine would overheat with no warning as a temp sensor will not measure the air that is now in the system....i have seen it far too many times....where ya located at?

Yep! !!!!!!!!
You can try this try that but a leak down test will tell you.....but from what you said I believe its the head gasket.......
Have the dealer do the test for you if you don't have the tools

I am in central NY was riding Camden, Osceola,Highmarket yesterday. Temps in low 30's plenty of snow. A little sticky. Looks like I need to make sure all the air is out of the system 1st. Ho difficult to get to the thermostat? What tools are needed for the leakdown test?

My sled would sit and idle full of coolant and never get hot or blow out coolant. As you ride it slowly starts to push out coolant till it's low and then it gets hot. Talk to the guy's at Big Moose Yamaha. They have been there and done that. I'm in Lowville not far from you. The head gasket stuff was about $150 and $30 to plane the head. My time was like 15-16 hrs, get a service manuel, it will pay off in spades. I'm riding to Taberg this afternoon.
