Huge Yamaha fan here, but not as familiar with the modern 4-strokes (have had VMax and SRX previously, as well as Yamaha ATV's). I have been proposed a trade for my camper and it is an 09 Nytro XTX with 6,000 miles. I'm coming from 2 stroke sleds where 6,000 miles is concerning and a rebuild is right around the corner, but I just want some reassurance that 6,000 on these sleds isn't even broken in yet and that I would have years of trouble free riding...with proper maintenance. Previous owner always had serviced at the local Yamaha dealer and they are easy trail miles. Are there any known issues around this mileage, aside from bushings, etc? Everything I've ready about the XTX just absolutely raves about them.

Look around, 20,000 miles is nothing on these motors. At 6000 miles I'd be asking about front a arm bushings, exhaust donuts, ball joints, check skid over, check drive shaft bearings (see if they are dry or if they have been greased) same for jack shaft bearings. Check ski bushings, also the skid idler wheels, bigger wheels will save you a lot of headaches with replacing slides often (more than Yearly if you ride enough and conditions warrant)
Basically what I'm saying is general wear items, the engine should be the least of your concerns!

That's what I figured, but I know you guys are the experts and I respect your opinions. The current owner did mention that all front end bushings were just replaced. I would hope that the Yamaha dealer kept the machine greased up, but I will still check it over.

The driveshaft and Jackshaft bearings I am talking about are on the clutch side. There are threads posted on this forum outlining how to grease these.
If exhaust donuts have never been done I can almost gaurentee they are toast. No big deal, I ordered mine through sledtoyz and for $60 I am getting copper ones (last forever apparently) and not bad to put in sled.
I do how're know hat the xtx nytro's ate slides, but if the sled has 6000 miles on it maybe something has already been updated.
Other things such as hid lights (ddm tuning for $50-60) steering post relocate (oft racing) and better skis are good mods to do, but not nesessary.
You can usually tell pretty quickly if a sled was beat on and not maintaned properly or at all once you look sled over.

Good to know! What exactly do the donuts do? I do know that the slides and carbides are brand new on this sled. Are you guys all running Yamalube 4 Stroke oil?

The equast donuts are what seals the equast flex pipes to the header, the factory ones usually burn away with time. An excellent replacement are the copper ones as previously mentioned and are easy to replace your self if handy with basic tools. I replaced mine with copper ones around 15000km ago and still like new. My self I use yamalube products because that what the motor, chain case etc are tested with, but that's just me... I also used to ride 2-smokes this is my first yamaha four stroke and in two seasons have quite a few miles on it ( had to put it through the test ) and had zero issues with anything except wear items. Replaced donuts with copper, a-arm bushings with oil lites and a few idler wheel bearings the rest we're wear items carbides, sliders, oil changes etc. the motor runs just as strong if not stronger than new.

Just like the man said, I think he covered it all. Many of the items on these sleds are perishable and if replaced the longevity that they give is incredible. The powerplant is rock solid. Give it good oil every season and a filter and it should produce tons of riding. Yes, i use the yamalube on the engine.
I am just in the middle of overhauling the skid, having shocks rebuilt, replacing a few bushings, all the bearings etc. After 4 seasons and 11k, things werent in bad shape but needed some love. Good luck. MS

Lot of good advice to be found on here...
Totaled out my '07 Phazer early Feb then picked up R1 Larry's '09 RTX with just 347 miles on the odo for $5300, nice goodies already on it (see bottom profile) + extra take off parts and only added Excell's 6 wheels/ Dupont sliders as I'd read they like to eat sliders and dealer suggested.... Ended the season with just over 1,000 miles- it's a great sled!
Plan on replacing more normal wear stuff in the Fall (A-arm bushings, ball joints, donuts etc) before they really even go bad, no worries just ride.
Winter's more fun, what's the value of your camper?
