09 Yamaha Nytro XTX burt ign. fuse and died

Here' the picture, it's just above the secondary and is zip tied to the rad mount. Zip ties pulled the harness up tight and rubed threw the unprotected wire in behind.

Is this the wire that you had problems with sgilbert?

Thats where I had the trouble, I fixed it up by rewrapping the wires and then I wrapped the metal support with fiber tape. Something like hockey tape works weel to prevent it from rubbing the metal.

It always makes you feel better when you find the culprit!

Woops, sorry about that jp111 and sgilbert. Had glanced up to see who had posted and must've skipped one by accident. My bad..

Sure hope that's the only wire. Any final verdict on where those wires may run to?

I think that hising sound I could hear lastnight when I turned the key on may very well have been that wire shorting out. Somewhat odd it didn't blow the fuse right away again. Just really hoping this is the only bad one. Might not be a bad idea for others to check this wire too just to be sure. It's obviously been rubbed threw for a while. Asked the seller if he'd had any problems with it dieing but he said no it worked fine.

Here's a wider picture to show exactly where the wire is located.

That plastic cap just covers up a jumper. Those wires go to alot of different things. If you remove the cap you will see a formed piece of steel connecting all of those wires.

I knew my sled had an electrical gremlin after I bought because the previous owner had a 30 amp fuse in the panel. I did find melted wires in the harness leading to the right handlebar switches and most recenlty found the red and the brown wires coming from the ignition switch were melting together. I hope thats the end of it for me.

Glad you found your problem no you can ride again without worrying so much about when will it happen again.

Went up and taped it all up then found some 3/4" heater hose. Cut it all the way down and layed it on the 3 sides of that support. Then zip tied everything back up onto it. Shouldn't be no more danger there now. Also went ahead and put some 3/4" heater hose on the bottom harness as well just for added protection.. I didn't like the way it was laying on the water pump munting bolt

Wonder if maybe that 30 amp fuse didn't lead to some of the other problems?? Hopefully no more problems for you either.

Sure not much fun taking off an hoping you get back again. I ride alone a fair bit so that makes it that much worse. Need to have a fair bit of faith in my equipment. Will take a bit for it to earn my trust back again. Will carry a few more extra fuses with me from now on I think..

Thanks

Ryan

wow, just looked at mine, was a few short rides from being in your shoes. exact same rub.... thank god for this sight and the members. all sheathed and ready to go. need to send you some molsons. and by the way, I was impressed joe homeowner could find that and deal with it with out getting frustrated. hats off

Glad it helped you out. Hopefully it can posibly help others in the same situation. These forums are a very useful tool in the tool box.

Not trying to self promote but maybe something like this should be added to the stickys just as something to watch out for. I don't know if there are many other sleds with the same problem or just a select few. Thinking there may be more.

Thanks

Ryan

Thank you, thank you, thank you for posting this. Last year my sled just shutdown unexpectedly and fortunately we found the 20amp ignition fuse that blew. Last weekend I went on a trip and the same thing happened again. I read this post yesterday and figured I might as well check that wear spot and sure enough when I went and checked mine tonight it was worn thru to the point it was almost severed. Thanks again saved me alot of headaches.

Glad it helped you out. Hopefully if fiixes your problems.

Took the sled out yesterday afternoon after everything dried out and so far so good.

Decided I'd go threw it once more just to try and make sure I had all my bases covered and I added a little extra protection under the relays as well. Nothing was worn threw that I could feel but near the back end of the relay mount the wires were siting on a sharp edge that I thought might give problems so I just put a peice of heater hose around them too. 5/8" fit niceley in there.
