1 Expensive yet valuable lesson learned........

I just trailered my rx1 400 miles, and no problem. But, you are right guys, it only takes once.

Too bad man hope you get it running again asap, well look at it this way, thats probably the only way to hurt these motors :D

Man that sucks to jave to deal with htis but I have to ask ... was there ANYTHING done to your machine (Carbs, Fuel Pump etc.) before this happened? ANYTHING at all??

I am not doubting you in any way but about a month ago I asked both my dealer AND a very reputable R1 engine builder about installing these on my machine about a month ago. I got the same answer from both guys (separately). They said....No need because the fuel pumps are auto-closing (they have a valve that closes when the machine is turned off) if that sounds right. SO what gives?

Also I have to say...the manual CLEARLY states NOT to trailer when the fuel level is ABOVE the Carbs....2 gallons is certainly BELOW the carbs so nothing you did was wrong. Obviously, if you go after Yamaha for this one they will want to inspect this machine carefully before agreeing to warranty so please keep us all advised as you progress.

In the meantime I will be installing these valves just in case.. :?

RXWonder, to answer your question yes, there were a number of things I have done including the mountian carb float bowls, new fual pump, and new fuel filters but not recently. All were done last year when they came out.

I'm sure you guys have heard about having to pressurize the fuel tank in order to get the pumps to prime after it's been sitting a while. Well last year early in the season I had it happen to me in the dealership after I had some work done. They couldn't figure out why it wouldn't start and started looking at differant things and came to the conclusion that I had a bad pump. One that was now as we know not self priming itself. Well we tore that "bad" pump apart and as it turns out yes there is a "auto closing" feature on the pumps but it consists of a spring and a ball bearing to stop flow or prevent back flow not a valve. The vaccume pressure mearly sucks the fuel through the pump and into the carbs and the bearing just does not allow fuel to flow back through. a simple vaccume actuated fuel pump common on most snow machines. I'm not here to dought your dealer or R1 engine builder either, but as I recall, I could be mistaking but the R1 does not even have a fule pump, it is gravity fead from the tank straight to the carbs. I'm here to tell you that I can and could see then that it would not take much rattling around for the small little bearing to come unseated and to allow fuel to bypass through to the carb's and with the float bowl bouncing up and down on the trailer it just gravity feeds in the crank case and engine.

The more I think about it the more it makes me mad because Yamaha obviously knows of the problem happening since it's in the manual, so why didn't they do something about it? IE......install the shutoffs from the factory. I may have to contact them about this, however my warrenty ran out in October so I will probably take it in the shorts. More to fallow, I'll keep you posted as time passes on this situation.

Irreguardless of the cause, whether it was caused by something I had done or not, had I spent the $30.00 for the valves I wouldn't be in this perdicament. My bad all I can do now is try to prevent the same from happening to someone else......My loss.....Your gain

Tree, I'm not sure what is damaged. I can tell you it turned over MAYBE twice and then just sounded like it exploded. It wouldn't even budge after that. I tried to turn the output shaft and it wouldn't move, it was completely frozen. I drove directly to my dealer and he said the probable problem was a bent crank and internal damage caused by hydrolocking. They were supposed to drain the oil and let me know what they found. That was late Saterday and they are closed on Sunday so I exspect to here more Monday or Tuesday.

shut off vales

i guess thats a good resion why you shoud not pour gas in to your cyls to get it running. the same thing could happen. these are four stroke high performace moters not the souped up chain saw moters that other guys are running. be careful you can do lots of damage very fast. big doller damage like bending a rod and sawing a moter in half breaking a timing chain and letting the pistons kiss the vales bending most of your vales. and all that from just from locking up with a cyl full of gas and one of the others fireing bang its over that fast .you can do this stuff but just roll the clutch over by hand throut one complte cycle first

As it turns out......Total engine was destroyed. They found a bent crank, 2 bent connecting rods, bearing damage, a few bent valves, and the list goes on. They are going to replace the entire engine, easier that way.

Engine destroyed

The whole thought of this is frightening and unbelievable. Is this going to be covered under warranty? Why wouldn't they install shut-offs at manufacture?

dealer

1FunRx1............Whose your dealer? Is it on the Peninsula or in anchorage? I feel this should be a dealer fix let me know who it is and I will go see him. I've got 2 rx-1s and trailer my sleds to eureka or petersville every weekend!!! Sorry for your troubles. Keep us updated!!!
