10,000 Mile 2006 Apex ER Review

10,000 mile report

Great to hear that the APEX is doing well at the 10,000 mile mark. My 06 GT has 6000 and has yet to have major issues except the replacement of one y pipe and gaskets. I updated the chaincase after hearing the nightmare stories last year as well as the hand warmers and windshield.

It concerms me that reports continue to come in that the drive axle breaks almost like clockwork at 7500. Makes me want to order one and have it put in now before my trip gets ruined.

Sure we ride Tug Hill but I have not broken and suspension parts or cracked any rails.

Going to Mt. Laurier Quebec at the end of February......

BEING SAFE

Mark I know!!!! I have bee to Mt Laurier many times. I always stay the the Hotel Sennater and I park way around the back. I feel safe there but it can be rough I know the owner Michel he keeps an eye out for us.

I missed you in Val D'or last year. We would have gone there but the guys wanted to have a shorter drive. Next year: THE GASPE. You should come with us.

My 6,500 mile report:

A lot of what I read sounds familiar. At 3,100 miles, I had blown all of the exhaust gaskets and cracked the Y-pipe. Yamaha graciously paid for the new Y-pipe, even though I didn't have YES. I also lost a couple of idler wheels at this point. The MonoShock remote adjust cable had broken also.

At 5,000 miles, all exhaust gaskets had blown out again, and had lost 4 of 6 idler wheels and a rear axle wheel. The remote adjust cable broke again.

At 5,800 miles, I lost 4 of 6 idler wheels again. I insisted on replacing all 6 with Kimpex idlers. At 6,500 miles, all six are still there. However, I think I am hearing the familiar ticking coming from under the tunnel - more blown exhaust gaskets. Third time. I blew a drive belt at 6430 miles.

How do I ride? Not that hard. Occasionally I will rip it up, like past weekend through twisty and moderately bumpy Old Forge trails (Trails 10, 38, 83 and the loops for those who know the area). However, most of the time, I ride on fairly smooth trails and don't tear it up with the throttle. I stay off Tug Hill when its beat up and when I do ride on beat up trails, I don't go flying through the bumps like others do. My MonoShock rarely gets bottomed out, even with it set halfway beaten MAX HARD and MAX SOFT.

I am not pleased with the amount of work this sled has needed. So far, $770 in parts/labor this year, well over $1000 since new. This is hard to swallow after spending literally $0 in 11,000 miles on my two previous Yamaha sleds.

If I didn't love the sled so much, with its magnificent ride and great handling (for me, not necessarily others) in stock form, it would be gone. I can ride 200 miles without being sore, or ride hard through twisties keeping with the lightweight sleds without much of a problem. The Mono is dialed in just perfect for my style of riding - plush on trails but firm enough to stand up to harder riding on moderately bumpy trails, which is all I ask it do.

4 stroke reliability

Evidently reliability all depends on how you ride.
For myself and the family I have had an 04 RX1, 05 RS Venture, 06 Attak, 07 Phazer, 08 Apex GT.
With a total of 25,000 miles for the sleds there have been 2 track wheels replaced along with oil changes/hifax/skags/belts.
None of them have ever needed to be picked up or towed.

Thought I'd share some experience, since I ride other brands but put on high miles:

2008 TNT 500SS: 10,000 miles, lots of recalls in off season, in shop for
couple days during season for seat foam and handle
bar warmer updates. Very dependable! Few spark plugs
still original drive belt, one set slide rails, tape on wire
rubbing, 18-20 mpg

2007 AC Twin Spar F-5: 8,200 miles, Act Drive, piston and Cylinder,
one drive belt, couple plugs

2006 SD GTX (2 Up): 7,000 miles, one plug, one fuse

2005 REV 550 fan: 2,500 miles nada

2005 AC Pantera 550: 3,000 miles one piston

2004 AC Turbo Trail: 6,000 miles , chain & chain case, driven clutch

2003 AC Pantera 550: 5,500 miles nada

2003 AC ZL 550: 3,500 nada

Overall, the TNT was outstanding, never replaced a bearing and never touched the clutches. Sled still runs like it came off the show room floor. Just traded it towards a 2010 TNT. Sled, at over 5,000 miles at start, did a high speed run from Maine to Ontario and back and never missed a
beat, going almost 3,000 miles on that one trip. Sled got a regular diet of grease, and that's about it during the 10,000 miles.

This is a great post you guys. I am so behind you in millage LOL!! I bought my sled brand new mid winter last year and I am so anxious to ride it. I only have 1,241 miles on it and hope to get a whole lot more than that this winter.

agree with thinksnow

I have to agree with thinksnow on this
all sleds have problems but they dont have the huge forum to complain on
this site just gives riderd the ability to see what others are saying

Sorry kuni,
When you said suspension, and exhaust will break on a regular basis I just don't think this is accurate. It isn't that I didn't read it correctly. I have never heard anyone else say that.

You sound like you know how to set up a suspension for rough trails.

Do a search. Again, I said exhaust and suspenion for those that ride beat up trails over long distances. No one can dispute that. The way you ride and the fact you live in the UP are two way different things compared to how I ride and where I live. :drink: I am sure we have two different definitions of rough trail. :exc:

Moving on.

I ride extremely hard on my 07 RTX and I have 11,000 miles. MDKUNI is correct. I am on my 4th set of y pipes. I will say my pro active CK has held up pretty well though.

Ya don't screw with it to try to make it go faster than yer buddies bigger sled, and do all normal maintenance and they will last a long time. Play with it and you WILL have problems. Have lots of piston ashtrays home trying to go faster.

not from da yammie though

I have 07 6500 miles my 10 to 12 boggies wheels, 3 bushings in front w ARM coming loose and falling out, 2 broken a W arms , 2 sets of exhaust donuts, 1 exhaust cracked and blew out a 2 inch hole. broke 1 transfer rod eyelet, jack shaft bearings with 1 speedo sensor, 1 belt,3 sets of high fax, one head light brace, I think that the w arm bushing lock nuts suck they dodnt stay locked also had the same style of nuts com loose on my reverse linkage causes the it to pop out found lock nut failing, Had rear shock done beacuse it leaked out all the oil. there is alot of little things that go wrong with these sleds that I think are poor stuff. NOBODY Should have to put in a exhaust 600.00 at 5000 miles crappy design a prolblem with ZERO support from Yamaha, I am putting in a new track now with all new bearing and bushins. Some body said to put in anti rachet drivers so you can run your tack a little looser so you dont go through as many high Faxes. I am thinking of putting on a Cobra 1.375 or 1.500 any feed back, and where to buy from.
