13MM sway bar, harsher ride in uneven trails or not??

I think this question is subjective and there are
So many set up variables that a guy has to just try the 13mm bar him self and see if he likes it.

I Just ordered the Pioneer wide front end kit with the 13 mm sway bar. I am setting this sled up for lake running and a bit of trail use. Any recommendations on shocks for this package? I would like to drop the overall ride height by an inch to an inch and a half. Not overly concerned about suspension travel as I do not plan to run a lot of rough trails. Looking more for a stable high speed set up!

if you want it low, bolt srx ohlins on it, that will lower it.

I agree with Super - its subjective. We have 4 Apexes and counting in our group of regulars. The hardest rider is the smallest guy and the only one who has the larger sway bar - He likes it. Funny thing is I've never seen anyone on one ski more than him. I never felt I needed on my 06APGT and don't plan to add it to my 07ATGT.

The first weekend with the 06 was interesting with lots of inside ski left pitching me to the outside of the turn. Took out front pre-load until A-arms we near flat and the GT railed with the stock sway bar.

I find the sway bar helps in 'oops' situations where I am riding on the edge and the inside ski is popping up slightly because I mis judged the corner and then suddenly the corner sharpens and OOPPSS I hang on and make it but I know I needed all the help I can get to keep from rolling that motha....

Glad this thread came back, I was thinking about it just the other day.

The reason: just curious if 12mm sway bars are available and how many have tried them, which did you like, the 11, 12 or 13 best?

I am running an 08 GT with GYTR's up front, doesn't sound like it's the perfect combo for a larger swaybar, but I am curious? :dunno:

Irv,

Pioneer Performance sells 12mm sway bars.

Nick

Thanks Nick, I may just try one but I'd really like to hear from a few who have tried them on a sled similar to mine first.

Any idea if Yamaha carries different size bars or is it all aftermarket when it comes to those?

Bought my 07 rtx with the 11 and hated it. Put a 13mm on it and loved it. I know have a 11 xtx with the 12mm and its ok. I put a 13mm on it a month ago and am waiting for the white stuff to try it out I am sure it will help with the little bit of inside ski lift that i don't want. Just my opinion but for trail riding i think the 13mm is a must!

Yup,harsher ride,or handling thru the bars,i would not go any bigger than 12mm,i have run them all, from 10mm on the rx1--- to 13mm on the 06 apex rtx.

The big thing to remember is that no ammount of user feedback, and no number of threads on the set-up topic will replace just trying it and seeing for yourself!
I run the 13mm bar, but I have Ulmers busing kit, Evol X's, Razors and Bergstroms on mine, and it rides totally different than someones sled with even one component different than mine. Even maintainence items like greasing your busings with a high grade marine grease, and keeping the dirt out of them makes a difference.
I would never change my 13mm out, but it really boinl down to rider preference, and having the patience to try different set-up combos and adjustments before giving up on something. If you like riding hard, fast twisty trails, you'd probably love it!

I do like to ride as you stated so I may just give one a try, thanks for the info ;)!

I agree with Nate, you've got to try it. I love mine and it's fits how/ where I typically ride really well. But others seem to hate it. Also, if you commit to setting your Apex up for corner to corner riding, you need to commit all the way. Set up is everything, and this bigger and more rigid bar will require you to lower your front end, suck up your limiter strap a tad, and turn out your transfer rod some. The exact set up will be dependent on you. Need to take the time and dial it in for you. But in the end, the sled will ride and perform better in the twisties and you'll negate inside ski lift.
