'16 Turbo recall - Interesting tidbits

Yamaha has egg on it's face over this. I can understand the first one but..........
I'm going to contact yamaha tmrw. I spoke with a YCS Rep before the season started and pretty much got nowhere. In fact he was kind of rude after talking for a bit. It took a long time to get him to admit there is even a known issue with this motor. Everything about this sled could not be more disappointing. I'm not a happy yamaha customer and have made that very clear them. They got me my last replacement motor within a week which I thought was pretty quick but it barely made it another 1000miles. Guess I'll find out this week how they are going to handle this one.

Good luck.

I'd be willing to bet your replacement motor was a new style motor also, if that's the case it's to be expected. hopefully you get a new motor and rods and never have an issue again

I also had a terrible experience dealing with Yamaha Canada! I received a letter stating I need upgraded rods and that I am not to ride the machine until they were replaced. Late December rolled around and my dealer hadn't received any kits yet! So I called and got the same spiel, Yamaha would not take responsibility for the rods failing.. continually blaming the third party turbo manufacturer. The rep I was talking to also mentioned to me that the older nytro motors were way over built! Which makes me worry about where Yamaha is going in the future.... I also asked about the rods they are intending to replace mine with, and they could not tell me ANYTHING! Apparently it's CONFIDENTIAL!?? terrible customer experience and they are doing a horrible job trying to fix their mistake!

If you look back in 16 AFTER it was discovered here that they put different motors in without telling the owners. Yamaha made a written public statement that this new motor was equal or better than the previous motor in every way. I highly advise finding that and reciting it word for word anytime you talk to anyone from Yamaha.

Thanks for the advice cannondale, I will have to keep that in mind if I am talking to them again. My machine will hopefully be done and have new rods in it this week! I am still a little worried about the quality of the new rods they are installing.. I guess time will tell how they hold up!

The new rods are very good rods as long as they are also made to spec and installed correctly. File tells the story. And a good tech who knows how to check bearings is mandatory. It is not a easy job and I disagree with their procedure already. Anytime I Plastiguage the rod bolts should be replaced at final assembly. If they don't do that bolts will fail. Mark my words.

so is it all the white ltx le have the 16.5 newer motor or how do you know?

Read the bulletin posted if your vin is in there let the dealer figure it out or read the FAQ here. Please read the FAQ. Its a lot of work to keep it up and is so easy to navigate. Sticky at top of this and all forums. Sorry to preach to you hognit09 but if people aren't going to read the FAQ and help out I wont do it anymore. Just using you as a small example. You are taking one for the Team.

FAQ is the bomb. Spent HOURS reading damn near all of them before buying the sled and keep going back for new ideas/maintenance tips/etc. Your efforts are so appreciated.

I know my dealer did the plastigauge but I am uncertain wether or not they replaced the rod bolts after doing so. I am assuming the rod bolts are meant for a "one time use" and once they are torqued they are to not be used again? Can I expect my rods to let go in the future because of this?

Rod will be fine but bolts break. Been there done that. I would not chance it but that is just my opinion. That is why Yamaha in the bulletin posted says NOT to plastiguage the bearings and just trust the markings and chart. Like you trusted them to put good rods in in the first place? Not Plastiguaging is nuts especially with rookies doing it. Was a cost saving cheap #*$&@ move on Yamahas part.

I got a phone call from Yamaha today. As of today, there is a "provisional recall" on '16 MPI equipped SR Vipers.
It will become an "actual recall" tomorrow. They told me my sled is part of the recall, the recall parts are available, and I should take it to the dealer for repairs.

They must have seen my PTO request on the calendar this morning...
