I just bought a used 2005 RS Venture with 2000 miles on her. The guy I bought it from did not run it at all last year. When I went there to get the sled he told me that he had a difficult time getting it going after it had been sitting for so long. He also claimed to have cleaned the carbs just a little while ago. When I showed up to pick up the sled it was in a heated garage and had been warmed up so it started up right away and seemed to idle fine. When I pushed on the throttle just a little bit it would stall. I would start it back up again and it would stall again when I would give it a little bit of throttle. The only time it wouldn't stall is if you "toggled" or "feathered" the throttle. It seemed to run good through the field, so I bought it and took it home thinking that it was probably just bad gas and that I could fix it.
Well, I got her home and changed out the gas and now it's running even worse. It will start, but the idle is not consistent. It will rev up high then rev low and as soon as the warm up light goes out she idles at about 800rpm. If I can get it to throttle up without stalling (after about 20 minutes of warm-up) it will rev up and when I let off the throttle will stay at about 2500rpm for about 5 seconds and then drop back down to 800rpm. It's kind of popping on idle too. I tried adjusting the idle speed by turning the idle screw and that didn't seem to do anything. Overall, it's running like crap. I have not tried riding it yet, this has all been done on my trailer. Any kind of help would be appreciated.

I see your new here, so I'll get this out of the way. Please add your location to your profile. It is a site rule. NOW, that's out of the way. The most likely reason you are having issues is dirty carbs. Regardless if PO says he cleaned them, they're most likely still dirty. My riding partner has an 06 Rage, and his are cruddy every year. Check in the RS section and you'll find FAQ and tech info in the header at the top of the forum. Also, if you post your questions there, you'll get LOTS of help. Oh yeah, welcome to the site!!
Yes I will second it clean those carbs. Its not really that bad or hard to do.

I think I updated my profile to include my location, thanks for that. After posting this I spoke to the guy I bought the sled from and he told me that in fact, he did not actually clean the carbs he just took the bowls off and cleaned those. I have no problem removing a carburetor from a 2-stroke sled and cleaning it, but a 4-stroke is a different animal. I don't dare even attempt to tackle that job, so it is off to the shop.
That's fine if you want to take it into a shop. I personally like to do repairs myself then you know what kind of job is done and it gives you first hand knowledge of your ride and its a good feeling to fix it yourself. If you want to do it yourself we have very good write ups and how to's so you can do it yourself. At the top of this and every page there is a link called TY Tech. Click on this link then click snowmobile, then engine, scroll down and find all the links on cleaning carbs in fact there is one there on rx1 carbs.

Absolutely. I am certainly one who prefers to fix things on my own as well. I don't have room in my garage and we have been having some darn cold weather here in Maine so far this winter. Right now we are in the middle of an ice storm and I want to make sure the sled is ready to go by Friday for our first ride of the season. I will certainly look at all of the DIY tech tips. Thanks

So I just go t my 2005 Venture back from the shop and it runs like a charm. Only paid $60 for them to clean the carbs and get it running right. Money well spent. Now all we need is some snow. Merry Christmas all!!
