I have an 05 RX-1. I have read many posts dealing with idling problems, but not like this one. The problem is the cold idle. The electronic controlled fast idle, that shuts down when the temperature light goes out. This is the way it functions on an 05 RS Vector, and used to on my RX-1.
After the cold start, the idle initially functions correctly for a minute or so and then drops down to the warm idle too early.
I read about the TPS and the carb cleaning for straight idle problems, but not for this step down from high to low idle. I assume this is controlled electronically, but do not know where to start the diagnosis. I appreciate the wealth of knowledge on this forum........

idle problem
Temperature is below freezing, really any temp when the engine is cold. I start it with full choke on. After a couple minutes it steps down to low idle. I have to keep my hand on the throttle after the step down or it will start to run rough and stall. After the temp. light goes out, I can release the throttle and it idles fine. Warm starts are not an issue, machine idles fine.

Choke also tied into the idle speed at least it is on my Vector and RX 1.
Choke position 1/4 to 1/3 on should give you a high idle of 2,000 to 2,500 rpm. I usually reduce choke quickly once the sled starts to idle speed of 1800 rpm or so until light goes off and then slide choke all the way off.
If, as you say, your choke position makes no difference then the high idle portion of it is likely broken or out of adjustment.

what governs the idle
So what component governs the idle? I believe the temp sensor is working correctly. Temp light goes out when warm.

Make sure your carb heaters are plugged in too.

Have you checked your spark plugs? If you are choking it for more than 30 seconds, it is highly likely that you are fowling a plug or two. A confirming symptom would be: Once the sled gets warm, it runs O.K. because the plugs are not fowling. When the sled starts acting up, stop it immediately and take out the plugs. One or two will most-likely be wet. While you are in there, clean the coils' exterior and dielectric grease the inner tips of the coil and plug tips.
Also, if you need to choke it for more than 30 seconds to keep it running at freezing temps, then you need to clean the carbs. Have you cleaned the carbs? On a '05 they are most-likely due for cleaning even with the best of fuel quality control. Make sure you get the jets clean. You should be able to see through the pilots. If you have not done a cleaning before, clean them twice. The second time you will get what you loosened up and have floating around to immediately plug things up. One cannot emphasize enough how important it is to clean them thoroughly. After all, you want to take them off the list of potential problems, as you trouble shoot.
If the plugs are not fowling and the carbs are clean, then I would look for a light show on the coils. Remove the coils, remove their rubber grommets, reinstall them carefully centering them in the valve cover, start sled, in a darkened room look down by the coils and watch for arcing. If they arc, they need to be cleaned with carb cleaner. Take off the rubber tips and clean under the rubber too. Reinstall rubber tips and reinstall. If they are still arcing, then you need to replace them or live with this minor flaw. Sometimes a little dielectric grease between the rubber tip and the coil will stop the arcing, too. But, it is trial and error.
