Hello, I have a 2005 Vector ER and was wondering how much chaincase oil is needed? The dipstick has a reverse and standard marking on it. 3oz fill it to the reverse marking and i think 7oz or so to the standard marking. I have reverse. Dealer tells me fill to the standard marking and didnt really know about the reverse marking on the dipstick. I filled it a little over the reverse marking to be safe.

Your dealer is right, fill to the standard mark, which is usually 7 to 8 oz's.

Why is the dealer right Irv? For the record, if completely drained, the chaincase in his 05 Vector will take 8 - 8.5 oz. 8 oz. will get you to the reverse line and 8.5 fills it to the standard line. 16,000+ miles on my 05 Vector ER (with reverse) and I've always filled it with 8.5 oz of Mobil 1 synthetic gear lube and the chain is still original.

Because his dealer told him to fill it to the standard line/mark is why.

Sleds with reverse have a wider chaincase, so you fill to the top mark of the reverse side of the dipstick as per the owners manual. This will give the same amount of oil without reverse on the standard side of the dipstick. Filling to the max. mark using the non reverse side of the dipstick will overfill the chaincase.

This is 3oz guys. Not 8.5 or 8. I drained it with the marking on the reverse side and there was 3oz in there. Filled it again to marking on reverse line. 3oz! Filling it to the standard line would be over filling and could cause a seal to blowout, right? My owner's manual doesn't give me the fluid capacity for chaincase oil?? I would like to know where that spec is.

Right out of the Vector service manual plus years of experience validating what the service manual says. I put 8.5 oz. in (measured) every time I drain and refill. The extra 1/2 oz. has never caused a problem for me.

I should have phrased my question differently - you said....."which is usually 7 to 8 oz's." Pretty vague when there are resources on this site that will give you the EXACT amount needed.

That would put you at the standard line on the dipstick and way above the reverse line. So you don't have reverse? Or does the manual state 8.5oz with reverse? I think the manual may only show standard measurement? The dealer told me 7.5oz and didn't look at a book. That is why I am questioning this whole spec. I cant find info anywhere on the exact amount with reverse. All I know is 3oz fill mine up to the top on the reverse line. Which barely measures anything on the standard side of the dipstick.

8.5 oz. puts you at the standard line. I do have reverse and have always put in ~8.5 oz. My Pyrex measuring cup won't measure to the .5 oz so I fill it to a tad over 8 oz. and once I fill the chaincase it's real close to the standard line.

I have scanned the 2 pages out of the Service Manual for you to see. The file with the "2" is the 2nd page.

Look on the belt guard. It will tell you 8.5oz.

That is for the standard without reverse.

It still doesn't tell you the amount for a machine with reverse. It is only showing "Standard". I'm telling you its 3oz for a machine with reverse. If people are putting in 8.5oz in a sled with reverse I think you risk blowing a seal from too much pressure in the chaincase. I know someone that had their sled done by the dealer and he ended up with chaincase oil coming out the vent tube and getting all over the place. Somebody has to know where that spec is.

"Chaincase oil coming out of the vent tube...."

OK dude whatever you say. Stop asking for help and if you insist, run 3 oz. in your chaincase.

I'm out.

The guys at Port Yamaha said to fill only to the REV line. I told them it was only about 3oz vs. 8 for the STANDARD line and they said it doesn't take much oil. I put about 7oz in last year though with no leakage or problems. The bottom reverse gear is much larger than the standard gear alone so it probably does a better job at kicking up the oil.

If you change it this year could you put in 3oz first and see what your dipstick reads and let us know? Thanks!
