Hi guys,

I have a high pitch squeal coming from my clutch at idle, I have blown 2 belts already after around a 1000 miles this year. The first belt had 2 seasons on it, and the other was my spare. I had the sled serviced in the fall and I am not sure if the clutch is out of alignment or what. How do I check the alignment on my clutch and what do you think is causing the annoying noise? Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.

you would need a clutch alignment tool to check for alignment. your belt may be to tight. There are 3 bolts on the back side of your secondary with washers that you can take out or add in to get your right belt tension.

4. Measure:

Secondary sheave clearance a

Out of specification Adjust.

Secondary sheave clearance:

35.0
35.8 mm

(1.38 1.41 in)

5. Calculate:

Shim thickness

For example, if the clearance is 36 mm (1.42 in),

install a 0.5 mm (0.02 in) shim on each bolt so

the clearance is 35.5 mm (1.40 in).

6. Adjust:

Adjustment steps:

Disassemble the secondary sheave.

Remove the bolts and original shims 1 .

Install new shims of the proper thickness and

reassemble the secondary sheave.

Measure the secondary sheave clearance

again.

Repeat these steps until the clearance is

within specification.

Yamaha recommends keeping the original

shims.

Shims:

Part number Thickness

90201-061H1 0.5 mm (0.02 in)

90201-06037 1.0 mm (0.04 in)

INSTALLATION

1. Lubricate:

Splines (fixed sheave)

Recommended grease:

ESSO beacon 325 grease or

Aeroshell grease #7A

2. Tighten:

Secondary sheave bolt:

64 Nm (6.4 mkg, 46 ftlb)

Secondary sheave clearance

for clutch alignment put a straight edge on your primary to your secondary and measure the distance between the straight edge and your secondary. spec is between 13.5 to 16.5 mm

POWER TRAIN

SHEAVE OFFSET ADJUSTMENT

1. Measure:

Sheave offset a

Use the sheave gauge.

Out of specification Adjust.

Sheave offset:

15
± 1.5 mm (0.59 ± 0.06 in)

(13.5 16.5 mm

(0.53 0.65 in))

Sheave gauge:

YS-42421-1

Push the secondary sheave toward the inside of

vehicle frame first and measure the sheave offset.

2. Adjust:

Sheave offset

Adjustment steps:

Apply the brake to lock the secondary sheave.

Remove the bolt (Secondary sheave) 1 ,

washer 2 and secondary sheave 3 .

Adjust the sheave offset by adding or removing

shim(s) 4 .

Adding shim Offset is increased.

Removing shim Offset is decreased.

Shim size

Part Number Thickness

90201-25526 2.0 mm (0.08 in)

Install the secondary sheave, bolt (secondary

sheave) and washer.

Bolt (secondary sheave):

64 Nm (6.4 mkg, 46 ftlb)

Recheck the sheave offset. If out of specification,

repeat the above steps.

When adjusting the sheave offset, the secondary

sheave free play (clearance) should be adjusted.

hope this helps

Awesome response from 06apex. He hit it on the head. The noise you hear is because your belt is most likely to tight. If your blowing belts which is very rare in these sleds, there is something else going on. Like alignment, center to center, worn clutch parts...etc

Did you figure out what was going on with the sled. hopefully your secondary just needed to be shimmed and didn't cost you money. Cheers and I will help any way I can.

Check the aluminum belly pan protector under the clutches. It's possible the first blown belt bent the protector just enough that it's rubbing the belt causing the squeal and the next blown belts. Push down for more clearance.
