Hi all new to the forum have a 2006 Nitro and the stator is bad not charging. Does anyone have a service manual or know if I have to pull motor to change stator? Any help would be great sled only has 2000 miles was stored most of its life I just got it runs great but no charge tested the stator
 

The motor doesn't need to come out. Remove side panel, oil tank, air box, battery tray, unbolt steering shaft and pull front engine mounts. Unbolt stator cover and lift the engine enough to remove it. It;s not that bad of a job.
 
Like Hell he did this is the RS section, and he has an RS Nytro

I do question though, Grizz, wouldn't the exhaust have to come off to be able to lift the engine that far?

This was originally in the FX section and was moved over to correct his mistake. No big deal.

No the exhaust shouldn't need to be removed. The engine needs to rock up just enough to clear the bottom of the stator cover

Stator change 2005 Yamaha Vector RS90. and similar engine
Lucky enough to have these friends living close by to help with beer drinking as well. They showed me the tricks and supported my effort. Never done this before, but confident enough to help others after learning by doing. The following are my documented steps from memory as to what is required. Some steps you might complete differently, but end result should be the same.
Beg for, borrow or steal a snowmobile lift. ( don’t actually steal anything) it’s just a phrase we use around here. The best advice I can give to complete this job quickly is to go slow. Get out phone or iPad and take pictures during disassembly. Lots of pictures.
Put sled on lift and raise to a comfortable working height
Lift hood
Disconnect lighting and instrument cluster connections at nose of sled
Disconnect magneto wiring harness connectors at same location. One is the large connector on voltage regulator. 2nd is small two wire connector
Remove air breather unit from top of engine. Three clamps hold unit to carburetors. Loosen clamps.
Disconnect 2 oil hoses on breather. One is underneath breather unit at oil cooler side of unit.
Remove battery
Remove battery mounting rack
Remove left and right side engine covers.
After removal replace as many screws / nuts as possible back into holes to assist with not losing parts. Also helps with remembering what screw/nut goes where!!!!
Remove vent panels at footrest locations on left and right side.
Remove main ignition key unit from gas tank cowling
Remove gas cap
Pump fuel from gas tank
Remove gas filler grommet around cowling
Remove screws holding gas tank cover and let it move freely
Remove rear Tail lamp cover
Remove Yamaha covers on left and right of exhaust pipes at rear
Remove two nuts at rear of sled holding seat in place
Disconnect tail lamp wiring on right side of seat along tunnel
Pull up gently on rear of seat and pull back to remove seat
Remove gas tank mounting bolts
Remove gas tank hoses behind handle bars under hood location
Remove handle bar wiring covers
Disconnect gas tank sending unit connector
Lift rear of gas tank and slide back to remove, Replace gas cap
Remove exhaust clamps from tail pipe at seat side of bellows. Do not remove exhaust manifold. This is a good time to inspect/replace those exhaust donuts upon re-assembly. Experience says get new clamps and bolts with exhaust donuts
Remove drive belt
Remove secondary sheave. This allows access to rear motor mount bolt.
Drain coolant
Drain engine oil
Remove oil tank
Remove 3 bolts holding reverse shifter bracket in place if equipped with reverse
Remove 2 bolts behind this mount for steering column
Remove steering column mount over right front ski.
Disconnect tie rod at same location. Freeing up steering column allows access to magneto cover bolts while shifting engine
This is when you need to sling straps to hold weight of engine. One can be wrapped around centre exhaust manifold pipe.
A 2nd sling to eyelets at front of engine
Attach slings to some type of chain block or engine hoist. Snug slings. Do not lift yet.
It’s difficult alone. A second pair of hands is nice if you’ve got a friend.
Remove rear engine mounting bolt nut.
Tap mounting bolt thru and pull out opposite side of engine behind secondary sheave
Remove front engine mount bolts (2)
With engine free gently hoist a couple inches at most and wiggle from mounts. Keep eye on exhaust pipes.
You should now be able to wiggle and nudge engine around to remove stator cover bolts. No special tools needed.
With bolts removed, pry cover off gently. Magnetic pull will oppose you. It’s not stuck. Wiggle it out and under steering column. Voila. You’ve got stator in hand. It’s on inside of the cover. The starter idle clutch gear and pin may have popped out. Replace pin in hole and slide gear back into grooves.
Remove old stator and Replace stator with new from Yamaha. I suggest OEM as after market appear to be unreliable. Your call. It’s not the least expensive option that saves the money. Doing this job yourself saves around two thousand dollars in Canada vs taking to the repair shop.
Remove old gasket from magneto cover and engine. Clean it good. Apply a bit of grease to a couple spots on new gasket and place on engine. Grease will help hold gasket in place while wiggling magneto cover back in place.
Big job almost done. Replace cover bolts and ensure all are tight.
Now wiggle engine back into place and install rear mounting bolt.
Now front mounting bolts.
Friend can now relax or leave.
Reverse the steps and reassemble. Ensure battery is good and fully charged. Magneto will not recharge a low battery. Replace fluids and start it up. Test voltage levels. Congrats. Put covers back on a go sledding.
May take 8-10 hrs. There is no need to pull engine out or completely strip it for this job. Biggest wrenches are 17 mm. Most are 12 mm or 14 mm. Some 10 mm. Phillips head screws and #4 and #6 Allan key. Good luck.

My dealer changed out the stator in my Vector for about $400 of labour. Charged 4&1/2 hours of time. Easiest job that I ever didn't do. Was worth every penny. Charging $1000 would be criminal, let alone $2000. I would look for another shop.
 
I only charge $150 plus parts to replace a stator in a delta box chassis. Last one I did took less than 4 hrs but I've been in these stator covers a few times.
