2007/08 Newberry Trail Conditions

well, the good news is they seem to be holding up ok...mostly because there are fewer sleds during the week. The hope is that it will cool off and snow as predicted. I should be able to give a better idea of how things are tomorrow.

Well the warm spell didn't hurt nearly as bad as feared. The snow held up pretty well and with the cold that just came through, most of it has firmed right back up. Still plenty of snow north of Newberry. As of last weekend there was plenty of snow to the south out through Naubinway and Curtis. Be forewarned though! If you take the trail from Naubinway to Curtis you will be in for a nasty ride west of Engadine where the trail splits north to Curtis, south to Gould City. THE CURTIS LEG IS CLOSED!! Meaning it is NOT groomed. When I came through it was obvious they had not groomed due to wet conditions, but it was all froze over when I hit it. In any case the rest of the trails were in pretty damn good shape.

Thanks for the update. It helps out with planning the trip. Hopefully it will stay cold and snow some more the whole trip.

Well, the trails are holding their own and with about 6 inches of new snow on Monday (2/4) things are looking pretty good! The rest of this week and into the weekend its supposed to turn colder (10s) then warm back up next week (mid 20s). Won't be able to report on snow conditions for a week or so as I'm going on a cruise through the western Caribbean (I know, I know right in the heart of snow season #$%&*!) but when I come back I think the little woman will let me go outside and play! Hopefully there will be some snow left!

Hey Stu, heading up week of Feb. 18 to 23. Soo to
Ironwood and back, any snow conditions would
be appreciated.

HEAVYD- Sorry I wasn't able to get back with you before you came on up. In any case, you should have been happy with the conditions you were greeted by. There is an outstanding base and at least 2 feet (3 feet in places) of powder to play in. Not much to complain about. It is a little chilly (-5F this morning) so dress appropriately. It's supposed to warm up to highs around 30 for the upcoming weekend (2/22-2/24) but its gunna cool back off again next week. Get out and enjoy it.

Stu, just got back on saturday. snow was the best
ive seen in a long time! trails where great, well grommed. 915 miles of good hospitality, food and
trails, and then i ran into deputy barny fife in Paridise, 57 miles from loading up and heading home. missed trail head, pulled into a driveway to
turn around and recieved a 115.00 ticket for tresspassing. thats right 20 feet 115.00 dollars
ouch!!!! but still a good trip but that sherriff was
a total assss!

Yeah, I hear ya HEAVYD, the cops are really hard on us sledders in this area and its a shame. I think a lot if it is the locals who don't snowmobile that complain for the heavy enforcement. What they don't realize is that they are hurting themselves by driving snowmobilers away; businesses close up and so now the person who bitches about the snowmobiles can't figure out why their favorite restaurant is out of business!
:die
Anyway, off of my soap box. Glad to hear you had a good time other than the one mishap.

With a little bit of warm up that we had this weekend and the cool down we are having now, there should be some excellent base from all of the snow we've gotten over the past couple weeks! There is suppose to be a couple inches of the white stuff coming down durning this cooler weather which should make for some excellent riding this weekend!

Well I made a loop through Grand Marais this past weekend with some friends and family. The snow was excellent and the trails were in great shape! With the warm weather and wet conditions of Sunday and this morning, the snow looked like it was going to start to diminish. However, as I look out the window I see big flakes in the air and about 3" of new snow on the ground. Looks like we should have at least one more good weekend of snow! Get out and enjoy while you can!

We actually got some snow in O HI O, 12 inches
of the white stuff!! So i got to ride at home for
a change. the whole family got to play together,
2 sleds, 1 wife, 3 kids all riding at once. we had
a ball!!!!!!! be back to the U P next year. talk to
you then STU

Stu: Is there still enough snow to get from the Comfort Inn thru Newberry, or do you have to trailer to the loading areas? Thanks, John

You'll have to do some bank riding and maybe a little back tracking (south and east), but yes I would say there is plenty of snow to get from the Comfort Inn thru Newberry (I'm assuming you will be headed out north). I just got back from a conference down in Lansing yesterday evening and there was Rev buzzing down the shoulder of M-123 (on the unplowed portion, of course).
