Any known issues? How much are the exhaust tips for these? (I cannot find them on the fiche!)

Looking at 2007 Attak or a 2009+ Polaris 600 Switchback. I know the Poo will be lighter, anyone with experience any input/feedback greatly appreciated!

(1st 4S sled.) Rider is 68 year old - good rider, keeps up with the younger guys fine.

The Yamaha exhaust tips are not chrome and IMHO don't look very good. Look on ebay and you'll find chrome automotive tips the same diameter that you can cut down and rivit on.

Do a search on APEX/ATTAK issues. Handwarmers, exhaust doughnuts, y pipes, skid wheels and hyfax to name a few. All have been heavily talked about and there are solutions for every issue. As actionjack mentioned, these are not a good off trail sled in stock form. With some tweaking they can be made very managable off trail. One of the best hi-mile trail sleds ever made. If you like hitting the throttle and having your arms stretched tight, this is the sled for you. Think about where/how you like to ride the majority of the time. I just reread your post and caught the 68 years young. Do you have good teeth? If you get the Attak, one of the side effects is permagrin. Even when not riding, It's hard to wipe the smile off once you have rode one of these things.

All that said THKSNOW looks like he is handling deeper snow pretty good. I spent 3 years on an 06 Apex GT before getting the Attak. With no mods affecting off-trail other than different skis it definitely goes better in more snow than the GT but mis-managing the engine braking will submarine you into a half hour dig out. Note ViperDave and others here will tell you that deep snow performance is greatly enhanced just by going with a longer extension than the stock Yamaha tunnel ext. Been meaning to do that but don't have air riveter so been procrastinating on it. For our 1000+ mile tours in Quebec I wouldn't ride anything else.

From what I have read here, just ditching the ripsaw will add to deep snow performance. My personal experience comes from an Attak completly stock. Between the ripsaw, poor approach angle, and lack of extrovert drivers, I was very dissappointed with the performance of a "longtrack" in 2+ feet of light and fluffy. I never hung onto that sled long enough, but have had other Apex base machines I modfied for excellent deep snow performance. I just don't someone buying an Attak thinking in stock form it will be a good boondocking sled like I made the mistake of.

This sled will be for my 68 years young Dad - he wants to upgrade his 02 Viper ER. Mostly just trail riding for him - he has a crushed vertebra and a "ok" knee that was replaced a couple years ago - even with that he was still in better shape than me at 43 at the end of the day. Appreciate all the feedback - by all means please keep it coming!!

Speaking as a 58 year old mostly trail rider that rode a 02 Viper over 10,000 miles and now my 06 Attak for almost 14,000... Perfect sled for your dad. Going from Viper to Attak is like going from a 4 wheeler to a Caddy. More leg room and the ride is superior. The biggest problem he'll have is removing the smile from his face.

Get the GYTR or Ohlin shocks for the front. Have the mono shock revalved and the right size spring if he's over 200lbs. Otherwise these sleds where designed with his riding style in mind

Stay on the trail

I too came of an 02Viper with 13,000 mi. on it. One other thing. How tall is he? I am 6'3" and have less than perfect knees . The stock seat is somewhat soft, allowing me to sink in. This puts your knees slightly above your hips. If he's uncomfortable, an Apex MT, or RTX seat is firmer and rides taller. I also ran a Rox 2" riser and it was perfect.

I came from riding polaris over 30 years, and just switched to an 07 attak a couple years ago. As stated above, not near as good off trail as the poo, but on the trail, it is a very nice machine. The 07 has more issues than say a newer one, but they can all be fixed. It is really about $. If you want something that is a fair amount better off trail, and is the peerfect sled on trail IMO, the 2011 or newer apex XTX is the ultimate.....but at a price. My brother has this, and the power steering, and extra track are very nice. Just know that if the attak that you are looking at has not had good upkeep, that you will be spending some money on it. As far as the durability of the two sleds that you mentioned, the poo will win in chassis and skid IMO, but the yami has engine and clutchuing hands down.

Get an 2008 anniversary sled with Ohlins at all 4 corners
x3 for the little extra. You will be $ ahead because many updates are done......plus as stated above, they look slick.
