HELLO ALL!
What a great website for Yamaha Junkies. Glad to be a part!
Now to the dirt!
Looking at a 2008 left over fx nytro, (seems to be quite a few still out there in crates) More of an aggressive rider and ready to make the move.
After researching this site for over the last week, I wanted to make sure the price is good and what is needed to make this a great and dependable sled
Bergstrom skegs are a must. (actually spoke to scott over the phone and at Milwaukee show, what a great guy. Order a pair for the apex and going to shim the ski)
Flip the rubbers in the ski
New ball joints. Question here, should the dealer put the new joints in before I pick it up???
Call ulmer racing for new bushings.
Extra wheel kit for the slide wear
Price seems right, $7500
Let me know if am missing anything and or your opinions

this is a standard machine.
I can get rtx for 8k from the same dealer
My main worry is that I am going to dump a bunch of money into sled for this ball joint / spindle issue instead of forking out the extra money and get an 09.

Ball joints are an "update". Spindle some people have problems some dont. Id go with the RTX for 8 but you could probablly do a little better

I say get the regular nytro, then use the $$ you saved towards sending the supension to hygear.

Last spring Highlands Yamaha had them for 6900.00 I believe. Try and get it for that.

I don't think an 08 is worth that amount. Between the front end update and the poorly calibrated suspension, it would cost you about 2K in updates. For that, I would try and find an SE. I know this wouldn't be easy, but it is worth a try.
It may sound like a good deal, but you do get what you pay for.

If you are an aggressive rough trail rider, keep an eye on the front subframe and the rear suspension rails. The front subframe tends to bend not only from hitting things, but also from heavy bottoming out. The rails tend to get small cracks around some of the bolt holes. Apart from installing the 2009 ball joints, I would recommend welding the front subframe according to the 2009 updates and also to get rails or rail stiffeners according to the 2009 SE.

I have been doing just this for some of the local guys so far I have done 5 sleds, welding bracing in to the subframes of the 08's and machining 2mm off the upper balljoints.

Also check the subframe when you buy it! Check the dimension of the shock inside the a-arms for a difference from one side to another. I had to get mine replaced last week. All under warranty of course. I hav mine as close as you can get on an 08 IMO and it is not cheap. Hope it all works
