Switch to Nytro ? Opinions

I too have always had a soft spot for the Nytro. I just love the way they look. I've never actually owned one though. I've been looking around and they can be had fairly cheap. I really like to trail ride fast. My Apex was setup to handle on rails, and that it did. My worry with the Nytro is that the only way I will ever get it to handle that nice is by throwing a bunch of money at it.

Also, I'm not sure what is better. The RTX or XTX. I certainly like the looks of the XTX more. It might be cheaper to buy another Apex and throw a WRP seat on it.
 
Surprisingly I have not had much interest. You will love the Nytro there a blast to drive!
Yeah I'll see if they will come down on the price or not. There might be some better deals soon since our snow will be almost gone by next weekend. If not I'll wait till next fall. I have been also throwing around an idea of just getting a M 10 rear skid for the old Warrior and just keep running it. I have 11,500 miles on it, but I've gone through it and its really a good machine. I have to make up my mind. I also wonder if an Apex would suit me better since I'm not an aggressive rider.
 
I would stick with a 10 + as they have they most robust version of the front subframe. A set of snow trackers on the stock skis does wanders for handling. Solid sleds and very easy to work on compared to Vipers and Winders.
 
My son and I bought a couple of left over brand new 2008 RTX Nytros in 2011 for $5995.00 each from our local dealer. We both have about 4800 trouble free miles on these sleds. I also picked up a 2010 MTX SE a couple of years ago and after 1000 miles on it it is a keeper also. We just finished a 280 mile trip from Paxson Alaska to Cantwell and return. My son went the first leg (140 miles) on 6.7 gallons of gas and I used a little more as I was pulling a sled, about 150#'s. That's almost 21 mpg. As I'm 72 and he is only 40 we usually travel from 30-55 mph, although I recently put my speedo to 100. We absolutely love our 3 Nytros!

That's funny about you and your son because I'm 43 and my father is going on 70 and that's about how we ride to. Hi Superfan, I rode a Nytro for many years. The difference between the 08 and 09 was different front end geometry. Go with the 10 and newer(like someone else mentioned) or at least an 09, unless you come across an 08 that has been updated.
Highs-great throttle response and easy to work on.
Lows-small fuel tank, seat a little too low and too soft.

I went from an 05 warrior to an 09 XTX Nytro 2 winters ago and love the Nytro. Mine has the snow trackers on it and I think it handles very well, probably better than the Warrior in most conditions. My only complaint is how locked into position my knees are, but I am 6'5" so its not all the sleds fault. My wife is 5'7" and she loves the seating position.

The Nytros I've been seeing that I probably could swing are 08 and 09's. Anything newer seems to cost a fair amount more. I don't ride to hard so some of those differences may not be to noticeable. If I got an 09 and added gusset kit to the subframe I would probably be good to go by the sounds. What do you guys think ? I also have another question. My wife has never rode her own sled, she's only rode on the back of mine. How easy would a Nytro be to ride for someone with no experience ? My thought is if I pick up a Nytro she could drive it for what little she would go and I would use it when she doesn't go.

I may have to keep that in mind to look for a 09 and newer Nytro. We are going to loose all of our snow this week so there's reason to rush a decision. Its really helpful to hear from people who own these sleds. I have no doubt a Nytro will be a big improvement over a Warrior. What kind of improvemens were made to the 09 and newer Nytro's ?
Go 2009+ in my opinion FX XTX (144") and to do again 2012/2013 black, looks amazing and has all the updated parts, starter relay, steering geometry, knuckles, etc. my front end + rebuild thread here details what I did with to a 2009 FX. XTX w $1800, basically a new sled. I was lucky the original owner put $5000 in accessories on it and second owner $1000 new track. I did all the wear parts, bushings, skis, HIDs, etc. Love the Yamaha triples and the four stroke is a beast... I found with tuners and the full Bergstrom setup (skegs, ski savers, shims) and a camoplast 1.6" it was as planted as most out there and nobody could pull away from me and if I was leading it was tough to hang with the roll on power and engine braking (which I loved, no need to touch brakes very often).... Great sled, quirks you can fix and long life, I broke 15,000 miles this season, but still runs and now rides like new.

I am 6-0' and one of the reasons I put the PowerMadd steering angle adjuster on was to move the bars back allowing my knees to not hit the plastic. I felt the cockpit was tight albeit ergonomically good, still restrictive. With the bars a good 2" back and 3" up getting there. For 2018/19 I likely will add extension cables and a 2" riser on the PowerMadd I have. Then I can be back 4" and up 3" for even more room... No need to be so close, also a WRP 2" taller seat and a steering relocate eventually for perfection!

The 121 Ripsaw track gets surprising hook up on a trail.
As far as a new rider starting out on the Nytro I would probably go with one of the clutch kits that lowers the engagement RPM. The stock clutching with the Nytro's low end torque is pretty snappy on start up! Other than that it is an easy machine to ride.

They are great sleds, I suspect unless you push the envelop of handling the 2008's are rock solid too. I agree, the MountainTech is a MUST. I took a big hit riding the Allagash river on a rock under 18" of powder directly where you don't want it. Lucky for me the extra cushion of the snow prevented any cooler damage. I can tell it did push in the factory "cover" bending the left aluminum bar as the end gripper is angled up now vs. level with the cooler lip. This is with the factory plastic skid plate over it which now has a nice 3" crack along the same left edge. MT skidplate for sure. Wondering if I can still run the stock plastic one over it as there is some nose protection it would still add...

I have some Rox risers from my Warrior that I can put on there, although my wife likes the Nytro so much i actually bought another sled and tend to ride that more often as lately i have mostly been riding with her and the daughter.

If your wife is the type that wants to ride or has ridden ATVs or is the adventurous type i think she will love riding the Nytro. My wife always enjoyed atv riding and then we got rid of hers when we had kids. We then bought a couple of 2 up sleds with the idea that we could take the kids and she absolutely hated snowmobiling. So i sold those and bought the Warrior, when the price of the Nytro's came down so much I was bought one. I was going to keep the warrior but the wife said "I hate riding" so I sold it, well I talked her into taking a ride on the Nytro and she loved it, and I was left looking for another sled so we can ride together. She just hated the old style feet out front position, gave her no confidence when going over snow banks and stuff. With the riding position of the Nytro she said she feels in control and confident which makes a huge difference.

That's good to know. She has driven an ATV some, not to much though. I think she would do okay on a sled with a little time and patients.
