2009 Venture RS Reverse/Forward issue

Thank you! I just installed a new belt and was having problems shifting in and out of reverse as well as the belt squeal at idle.

hi luc... did you repair it? Mine pops outta reverse when its not on load.

I first had the grinding problem on my 16 Vector. Did the linkage adjustment posted on here. Thanks! Got rid of the grinding problem. But then I started to have the same problem that started this post. I noticed if the sled was rocked it would come out of it. So I started to believe what people were saying about the belt being too tight. Keep in mind this can be a very dangerous condition. Especially if somebody else gets on your sled and is not aware of it. So today while doing my annual oil change I removed the belt and then the secondary clutch. There are 3 8mm socket bolts on the backside. Remove one at a time and remove 1 spacer. Mine only had one spacer small washer from the factory. After this my problem is solved. Thank you! Basically the secondary sheaves were spread apart by the thickness of the washer removed. The height of the belt in the secondary according to the owners manual was within spec. Before I made this adjustment. This site is a great source of info! Thank you!

I've got a 07 rs venture goes into reverse and back great but from reverse to forward there's excessive delay and slap also have a rattle from the chain case at low speed forward or reverse with what appears to be skipping chain?

Just got this machine last year 6200 miles . Tightened chain ,if anything changed the rattle pick up same slop.

usually at least a 1/4-1/2 turn on the secondary on these reverse chaincases on yamaha from new.

when you tightened the chain, did you go finger tight and back a 1/4 turn? otherwise it howls awful. just assembled one too tight and it was crazy noisy.

the guy i bought the sled from (05 venture rs ) had put a new belt and told me "yeah it squeals but its gonna go away..."

got home, removed clutch , remove the 3 washers that where on the back . now no more sqeal and shift so smooth i cant even notice when reverse "clunks" in!

But i wonder when i will have to put the washers back on . How will i notice the belt been slack and needing the washers back??

could be normal. i know mine will not switch into reverse if there is any tension/load on the track.
hi, mine will go reverse no problem but will pop out if i let go the load and try to back up again . its seems to hold on the gear just on load otherwise it will pop out. linkage ?

I did as you said I'm wondering if someone else has been in the chain case ??

I do not have the answer to your question. But I never once heard my belt squeal. From new only has 1500 miles now. Original belt. I think my problem was a slight drag at the primary. But not enough to make it squeal. Just enough to put tension on the secondary or jack shaft if you will. That the return spring in the chaincase could not override without rocking the sled. Basically I had too blip the throttle. Making the sled rock.

makes perfect sense! I'll try to get to my reverse linkage as my reverse pops outta gear . I tried it with the sled jacked from the floor and it stays in reverse no matter what... So it only does it when there is load on the track...

FYI
Those three bolts also wear substantially at the tip, often even more than the thickness of the washer. Sometimes they need to be replaced.

hard to tell as there are really no easy telltales for that. the one i was in on weekend i have been in 4 other times and i only had it off to replace bulkhead rivits behind it but it fought me this time for some reason.
