so I seem to be going through a belt or two a year on my vector. About 1000-1500 miles. My warrior I could get double that easy.

What gives?? I clean the clutches each year and don't run her too hard. Do these 3 cyl sleds wear belts faster or is it just me?

Seems hit or miss with these sleds on belt wear. Seems some never have changed their belts, and others are changing every 1000 miles or so. I generally go through two belts in a 3000 mile season. And yes, my clutches are serviced every year, cleaned, new springs and my clutches have been aligned. For me what I figured out is that being hard on the throttle and going full bar for extended runs heats my belt up so much that it delaminates prematurely. That said, I usually do tours and am hauling about 300 lbs of weight. So for me, being lighter on the throttle will extend my belt life, but at the cost of the fun factor. On my warrior, I was lucky to have a belt last 1000 miles. Yamaha belts also have a longer life than other belts that I have tried as well. Clutch alignment, belt deflection and checking for failing parts is about all you can really do.

Hit or miss on my 2005 Vector. Over the past couple years I switched to the Ultimax belt (the $100 one) and they've been exceptional for me.

Your riding style must include wot all the time or there is something wrong in the driveline , most of the genesis 3 cyl. engines are exceptional on drive belts, I was averaging 6500 to 7000 kms on a belt with my 06 vk pro and that was breaking trails, hauling fire wood and backcountry riding. I would check the slider shoes on your secondary and the rollers and flyweights on the primary! usually the rollers are overlooked and they get dirty and stick causing problems! hope this helps!

good thoughts... thanks for the replies.

I dont run wot much but do enjoy it from time to time. I will check my buttons and rollers. What is easy way to check clutch alignment? Would the removal of washers on back of secondary correct this?

Check to make sure your clutch sheaves aren't warped. I heard of people that had this happen causing what you described.

Huh. Never thought of that or noticed but will check.

Do you just look for them to be true?

Those washer are for adjusting center to center or better known as ride height. I do believe that the front engine mounts that require a special tool to adjust alignment. Cheers!

Check for grooves in the faces, we see that on sleds that travel at a constant speed/RPM

X2. grooves provide a lip in which the belt catches everytime it travels over the groove. This will prematurely stress a belt.

Grooves can typically be cleaned up with sand paper. I run sled then work sheaves with sand paper until nice and smooth again.

Rs venture. I have over 10,000 km on my belt. I do what Travis suggested above......fine sandpaper on a block with a handle....light buff with engine idling. Also take cover off primary and blow all belt dust out....crazy what comes out of there. We do this in my friends garage and he has some Aerosol spray lubricant that's made for clutches....I give rollers a little shot. No idea what it's called.
About 4000km ago I added a washer to each of the three bolts to increase belt height. Yamaha has two sizes. I think...not sure they come in o.5 and 1mm thickness.......I used the narrower ones.

Original belt...two weeks old....800km......burned a good spot in it trying to back it off trailer with park brake on......won't forget that lesson.

Some members take both clutches off and put them in dishwasher.

I too have a 2010 Vextor and had lots of blown belts. I replaced bearing, rebuilt clutches, checked alignements...everything but I kept blowing them. Finally I got fed up and took it to the dealer, first mechanic noticed was a little gap on the plastic body panel just forward of the primary which was letting snow in, he siliconed up the gap, no more belt problems.

I was blowing belts on my 06 Rage

15,000 km

I had warped clutch faces and the drive chain was all but seized from not changing gearcase oil.

I have a 12 vector now, 16,000km and it was fine till last season and I started blowing belts.
Clutch faces were a bit worn so I changed them and when we get snow we will see how it worked
