Well we're back! Hell of a late start as I looked at my last years reports and we were riding on Dec. 13. Finally, there is enough snow to groom and the old logging trails are getting a good covering. Average is around 8" (20cm) on the ground right now but the temps are forecast for above freezing for the next day or two. There is talk of snow on Saturday and cooler temps with snow further out, let's hope there is some truth to that!
FYI: There will not be gas at Rainbow Lodge this year as they are closing for the winter. There is a gas pump logo on the trail map, but they will be CLOSED.

We haven't seen a lot of snow since my last report but we have got some and the snow we have seems to be holding. The trails themselves are tender, thin and icy. We need more snow and badly. If you drive where no one has been (ie off on old logging and seasonal roads) then there is probably enough but with as thin as the snow is I would not attempt to ride on a cut over for fear of stumps.

Sorry its been so long since my last report, things have been helter-skelter lately and I've had to help out with the farm. Anyway, I was able to get a ride in last weekend (before the rain) and there is a good covering of snow, even in the woods. We lost some snow on Monday due to warm temps and rain/sleet but we managed to get a couple inches of fresh snow since then. The trails are currently reported in fair to good condition though the Epoufette/Trout Lake trail does not go all the way through to Trout Lake yet (swamp not froze over enough yet). Also please be aware that Newberry has a curfew from 11PM to 7AM (my guess is it will affect anyone with loud exhaust). Coming from north to south I would jump off the trail on to County Road 462 run across M-123 and turn south on County Road 403 until it connects up with the south trail (reverse procedure south to north).

We got some snow over the weekend. Over 15 inches (38 cm) up by Pine Stump, 4-6 inches (10-15 cm) just north of Newberry, and even 2 inches (5 cm) south of town. A friend of mine was sledding on the marshes and had snow coming up over the cowling of his Wide Track Skandic. The forecast for Tuesday doesn't look to promising: high of 37F (2.8C) and "wintry" mix. Depending on what happens with that, but the rest of the week is looking like cooler temps. Time will tell.

That could be a pretty tall order franklin...things are looking pretty rough right now. The last couple days have really killed the snow and the forecast through this weekend isn't going to help: Sunny with day time temps above freezing and no snow in the forecast to speak of. Somethings gotta change pretty soon or we're gunna be toast...

I haven't posted in a while because there has been little new to report. The trails have gradually diminished to dirt and snowpack has just gradually decreased. There is ok snow out on the non-groomed seasonal roads, logging roads, two tracks, etc, but the main trails are really starting to get trashed and down to dirt. The further north you go, the better the snow but "good" (deep) snow is getting hard to find. There may be relief in sight by Sunday but the way this winter has gone...I'm not holding my breath.

Finally some good news to write about! We had a good snow fall last night at last. Snow fall ranges from 3" to 6" (7.5cm to 15.25cm). All of the groomed trails have improved dramatically (if for only a brief amount of time). Off trail riding has also improved but I also caution that there still isn't enough snow to cover stumps. There is also talk of more snow for Friday into Saturday but no speculation on amounts yet. They are also forecasting 40s (4.5C) for next week...and rain (YUCK). I guess we'll just have to see...
One last note: THE NORTH STORE ON COUNTY ROAD 407, IS CLOSED AS OF FEBRUARY 27

Well the warm weather wasn't near as bad as predicted, so the trails are in "Fair" to "OK" condition. That said, they are talking some more snow for the weekend (3"-5"; 7.5cm-12.5cm) but another warm up next week. This could very well be the last hoorah!

As predicted, the weather has turned MUCH warmer (it didn't even get below freezing last night!) and we got about a 1/2 inch (1.25cm) of rain yesterday. The groomed trails are all but beat but the gates are still open. We may have one more big storm between now and the end of April but with no base and the ground thawed out, I don't think it will even be rideable. See you next year!
