2011+ owners input

I've been holding the key down from day 1. Had mine semi foul the plugs 1 time when I 1st got the sled. Haven't had an issue since implementing the hold down starts.

Ive been told to send some video proof of whats happening so im sending three short two min videos. Im two videos down with one left in the morning to show whats going on. Ive tested so far: Apex in the heated garage for 24hrs @20c with it starting first try but running rough for about 6 seconds before smoothing out.

Dropped the temperature immediately to zero within 5 minutes and let te sled sit for over 3 hours. Fired it up and it started first time and also ran smooth as butter.

Next video will be in the morning almost 12 hrs later sitting in a garage at zero degrees which should bring the gremlin out to film. It will either take 12 or 24 hours to duplicate it at zero because it always happens at freezing point and more frquently around -30c which seems to be normal for apexs but not at freezing point

What was it running like when you semi-fouled them? How long are you holding the key while cranking because I would bet that would be better than letting it stall all the time and should have no harm on the starter as long as its under 5seconds i imagine

It sputtered and popped and died. I then lifted the rear off the floor of the garage with my hoist. Held it at WOT and cranked it until it started. It took 30-45 seconds of cranking until it fired, sputtering and popping the whole time. I now cycle the fuel pump 2-3 times when it's been sitting for more than overnight. I then hold the key until it starts. Usually under 5 seconds. You can actually hear it when the starter disengages from the motor.

Yes on the premium,BUT, our premium has ethanol in it :o| :o|

The not wanting to start at extreme cold temperatures is not just an issue with the 2011's, its all the Apex line. My 07 would give me grieve at anything below -25c, I would cycle the fuel three times then have to hold the throttle wide open & crank her til she fired. It would cough & spudder for a few seconds then smoothen out.
I now keep the sled in the garage & haven't had a starting issue since.
I have read some positive remarks about running an inline heater which splices into your coolant hose, might be worth considering. Yamaha sells them for $40-$50 I believe.

brothers 2011 apex xtx would take 3 times when new no matter the ambient temp. He put in the ulmer pcv and it helped. I am not saying it is as good as my 07 attak(which is running instantly), but usually 1st or 2nd try now.

Man I lucky, barely turns over and starts. Better than my Nytro and 2007 Attak.

Are you guys using premium???

Running premium with a fresh fill off the truck from our refinery, Ive gone as far as getting a lab report done on the fuel to make sure it was 91 and clean. Everything came back good, no ethanol in our premium either. We blend our reg, mid grade higher to meet govt reg and as such dont have to mix premium with ethanol

Ulmers pcv helped when it finally started as far as not running rough than it did when stock, but didnt help start up, Ive even went back to stock and still have same issues

Same here, but im not using an inline heater to get sled to start first time at freezing temperature, thats ridiculous. 9 times out of 10 sled is not left overnight in the cold on rides since we usually only ride for a day and come back so having previous apexs I wouldve run into the cold starting at -30c maybe once or twice a season. Now Ive got grief with it sitting in a climate controlled area.

2011 xtx

My 2011 xtx takes three times to start also, +40 to -10 only temps I have operated in. What I don't understand is last year it did not have that issue. Now it does, also I am using Ulmers pc5. Starts and runs fine when warmed up.

Guys, started it this morning roughly 12 hours later in sustained temps at "freezing point". Started and it stalled, second time it fired and ran good. Going to leave it for 24 hours now and I should get the two stalls on camera by then even though its in a climate controlled building and hasnt moved
