2012 AK sled build

It's going to be slow. I just started a job where I'm out of town Monday-Friday until Christmas and I still have a house to finish so my weekends will be busy.

I should be able to wrap the subframe up this weekend though.

I'm adding a 1/2" brace to the motor mount. I can either go above or below the bolt holes. Thoughts?

I vote for going lower (below the motor mounts).

Have you worked out a solution for the steering? Think you might need some space for that? Just wondering if the supports you want to add will get in the way. It would be slick if you could modify your steering post set up to be more like the new RMK, but I can't where this would be any better than a straight post.

I vote for above the bolt, it would add more strenght in the direction the engine would move during full throttle, and it will look better :-)

Steering will stay direct like last year. Can't get much lighter than a straight tube from the bars to the tie rods.

Here are a couple pics from last week after I cut the die cast pieces off.

The tie-in joints will end up getting little braces.

You running the same tunnel or are you building a new one?? Looks good btw.. :-o

Got quite a bit more done tonight. I'll clean up the diecast cuts next weekend when I get back from work.

So this pics shows the last tube I'll run that will tie in the subframe, diecast frame, and steering hoop.

Awesome !
Now build a tubular tunnel like the Diamond S, that would almost make it a complete tubie.

I have a wild idea, but no sled to take measurements from so i dont know if its doable. but how about taking drive and jackshaft and brakesetup from a Skidoo XP, if you are able to fit the brakedisc between the secondary clutch and chassi, probably a decent weightloss with the hollow driveshaft and the possibility to buy beltdrive pulleys with the right splines from C3 and order a shorter gates polychain belt, make your own tensioner.
It would need some machining to fit the bigger bearings and brake setup but its a interesting idea.

Finished tacking up the front motor mounts. In hindsight I should have just ran a bent 3/4" tube instead of the 1x1/2 and 1/2" round but I didn't feel like completely redoing the engine mounts. If another one gets built I'll change it around.

Is the plan still to use this subframe as a template or a jig to build a couple more? If so, I want one ... How much?!! Keep it up. The creativity in your design/re-design is awsome. ;)! Can't wait to see the sled on the snow.

Being realistic, I don't think myself, rlcofmn, or HYFLYR have time to build more. I barely have enough time to work on this one. I would eventualy like to build one more with thinner material and a cleaner design just to see how light we could really get.

Judging from another forum I also read, I thought I was going to see some carbon fiber/foam core work on this sled. Not that I was on that site tossing around the same ideas...

It looks like the stock die cast is about ready to be removed. There isn't much left! What is holding you back from just removing the whole thing?
