I had planned on running the 2016 Viper this year then see where the price went on leftover SWs then putting my better half on the Viper and a SW for me. Well, I like the Viper enough to not really want anything else and I see a dealer must have gotten a deal on some old stock. I can pick up a new 2015 Viper for $7,500, my question is are the 2015s and 2016s exactly the same? Is there anything I need to watch out for in the 2015 model year?

I recently traded my 2015 viper in , I put just under 4000 miles on it and never had to do a thing to it. Just changed fluids . It was a great sled .

I believe 16 was the year you could buy a viper with either the old or new 998 motor (the one with the bad rods)...it was a running change during the build. Take the clutch side cover off and you should be able to see the motor. Look at the rubber head gasket. If it has the half moons in the gasket then its the old (good for turboing) motor. If it doesn't it's still a good motor just don' t turbo it.

So if my 16 Viper doesn't have the half moons don't turbo it? But, the 15 on sale should be the old motor and suitable for turboing? That would make it an even sweeter deal. Thank you.

15 will also have the older jackshaft and MAY have the older sight glass oil reservoir.

The sales guy was laughing at me while I was looking at leftovers, he knew exactly what I was looking for on 16's and it pretty obvious that quite a few others were opening the drivers side panels to look also. Only found 2 early 16's and both were MTX LE 162s. I took the list of serial numbers posted on the "recall" and it seems every late 16' built is on the list. Really like the 16' MTX 141' and may get it still get it, just wish Yamaha would toss in a few year of YES, or at least a heavy discount on YES to ease peoples minds on the 16's. The sales guy said most people coming in to look/buy know about the late 16' rod issue.

WTF??? The Viper has the 1049 3 cylinder, not the 998.

No. 1049 "Nytro" engine in the Vipers.
You are correct on the rods though. Yamaha changed rods and aren't turbo friendly.
