Hey, new to the forum. Just wondered if anyone has ever tried a 21 tooth gear on an apex? Mine is a 2007 rtx, any input would be appreciated.

I would just like a little more midrange. Bottom end is fine, and i'd be ok with sacrificing a little top end. Totally stock, and I got beat by my buddies new 800 etech from about 40mph up to 80mph, and then I could start gaining on him again but I would need 2 miles! What do I do? Someone recommended a 21 tooth gear?

worth trying...my guess is it would be too low though. You would spin like crazy out of the hole. I have a feeling a good clutch kit would help you out more....if it is clutched correctly the midrange shouldn't be effected as much by the change in gears as the bottom and top end. (hypothetically)

what would you suggest for a clutch kit? Could I get away with just switching a spring?

kenny a good clutch kit will do wonders for your sled. ulmer racing is a sponser on this site. most of the guys here run his stuff. its tested and proven. i myself run a local guys clutch kit and am happy with it. install a good clutch kit before you change gearing.

A 21 tooth will not help you against the E-Tec. It will take a fair amount of top end away. Also remember if you start adding low and midrange you need to insure it will hook up. The Ulmer clutch kit will make a nice difference for you without changing gears.

23 top gear is what most guys run including myself, its the best comprimise through the whole power band, rtx has 22 top gear and is slower than all other apex models on top end, go 23 and a clutch kit as mentioned ulmer has a good kit

Would the 23 tooth gear not hold me back on midrange sled frog? Or you think with the right clutch kit, I'd be ok?

not in the midrange from all the info ive gotten top is where you lose abit , but not that much to notice , unless u lake race alot but on trails u wont notice abit , most good stage 2 clutch kits recomend the 23 gear

you ride an rtx, that sled was ment 2 b a ditch banger thats why u have a 22 gear ( good low end ) all other apex r gear with a 24 ( not such good low end ) but good mid and top, 23 brings u right in the middle but a little lose on top due to 1 less gear tooth my apex used 2 cruise @ 182kms on my lake runs, now same runs @ 176kms! abit of loss but I do get going abit faster and I like that. most peaple I ride with couldnt keep up when the sled was stock anyway :exc:

same thing happened to me against an etec with my 07 rtx.(first time ever, and it to be a musterd bucket uuuggggggggg!!!)he got me mid range.
I hate to say it, but those etec's are a good set up.
the rtx is a different sled than the other apex's.I had an 06 er
before this one and it had a lot more top end. 22 to 24 gear is a big difference. That 22 gear is beatiful in the beat up bumps and ditches, wack the throttle to launch you or slide your #*$&@ out of a hair pin and its dreamy coming down those icy hills.
the bad, gas milage is olny about 12, er was much better and you loose the top end. unfortunately you cant have it all but we have most of it !

I dont get beat by the two cfr8's I ride with, so I'm not totally discouraged. But I really want to close that gap with these etechs. Clutch kit for now, just have to find time to get it done!

Yo zigoapex1, did you happen to try a 24t in your RTX? I have the same sled & was wondering if it would be worth swapping out the 22 for the 24 & the 68L chain for the 70L? How much top end you figure the 24 would have over the stock 22?zigoapex1 said:same thing happened to me against an etec with my 07 rtx.(first time ever, and it to be a musterd bucket uuuggggggggg!!!)he got me mid range.
