Well my first ride on my sled I bought this winter I broke my link.
I picked up last week as a leftover dealer demo. 750 miles or so on it.
I head up to tug hill this sunday. Ride about 140 miles then the link broke. had to limp the sled home 25 miles then finally we hit groomed trails and it was ok.
on the non groomed trail it was a nightmare. I could go maybe 12 mph max. suspension was banging and bucking the back end of the sled off the ground over bumps and bottoming hard. lost about 8 inches or rear ride height. on the groomed $hit you couldnt even tell it was broken. thank god i hit groomed trails or it woulda took me about 4-5 hrs to go the 50 miles i had to go to get back to my truck.
its bull though, first ride and i gotta deal with that. now i lose out on riding time, snows in the forecast, gotta argue with my dealer to get the 08 updates, plus my sled overheated twice if i let it idle like more then 1 minute.
not to mention it ruined the ride for everyone else i was with, and now i gotta take bashing by everyone for having a supposedly reliable yamaha that once again broke down.

Sorry to hear about that mate.
The link issue is evidently far more common then steering nuts backing off.
It is also just as likely to cause a loss of control, and in any reasonable person's opinion dangerous to operate for obvious reasons when there is this high of a risk for breakage.
I think that those of us that feel the same way should contact Yamaha asking why there isnt a recall on this part.
The sheer number of members on this forum that have experienced this fault should be a relfection on the number of sleds in service that could and do have this issue.
Yamaha is aware of the issue, as it has been addressed in the 2008 models.
Therefor why is there inaction and no recall or warning notice mailed out to all of us owners.
Do we have to wait for someone to get seriously hurt for this to be addressed?

I got a wealth of information to bring to my dealer i gathered up about people breaking them and people that got updated to 08 specs free. along with overheating issues. i'm walking in and throwing the 1 inch thick stack of stuff i printed on his desk.
its bull.
new sled, first ride. broken link, ruins my ride, ruins everyone elses.
no one should have to wait until it breaks for yamaha to do anything about it.
if my dealer doesn't cooperate with me its gonna be world war 3.
like ya said, does someone have to die first in a wreck when there rear suspension breaks before yamaha can do anything.

but here i am with a sled i just got... now i can't ride it, we have snow with more coming, have next two days off and have to sit around with thumb up my a$$. not to mention i'm down until the parts show up and the dealer can get around to fixing it. of course the dealers closed today and tomorrow as well thanks to the holidays. then i'm back to work for 4 days 12 hr shifts and can't possibly even get the sled to them when there open.

I would say this. Call the dealer see if he'll let you weld it till the kit comes, Yamaha did that for me. The break comes from a poor welding job. Granted it will suck up some of your time but it is usually weldable and probably twice as good as the original. Then get the kit that is listed a couple of places on here. Does suck though. I may have seen you this weekend. We were up on the hill saturday. Did you have the Nytro FX in your group with a excell exhaust.

I know of a handful of owners with 2007 with almost very low miles on their sleds. If Yamaha doesn't recall, it doesn't have to pay for the ones that break at a later date. Lots of people bought these sleds, and have no idea of the updates. Most people are not as informed as the people that frequent this excellent site. Some dealers are still saying "this is the first I've seen of this". A recall is appropriate, as the sled tries to spit you off once the link breaks. I noticed on mine, I can't fin2 grease nipples that I had on the old part.

i was riding with an 01 srx with an m-10 in it, and an orange new f6.
dropped around 1pm sunday rode till around 1 am.

I know who your thinking of.. I was going to ride with those guys and went to Old Forge instead... The guy with Nytro had an FX phaser last year that also broke the link. I too had my an Fx phaser brake it's link..

Nice job.If it makes you feel any better after I broke mine and welded it it hasnt broken again.Got about 600mi on since welding.Upgraded shocks though at same time so not positive if my weld job or shock have made it survive.I have mine out right now doing center shock work.Any ideas for reinforcing the thing?

another 200+ miles on the link. held up good so far although the trails were in much better shape as well.

Mine just broke at about 1350 miles. Dealer said part was back ordered. I sure hope this gets resolved quickly. My warranty ran out last month but Yamaha said being so close in dates, they should be able to cover the cost. Wish me luck.

tell your dealer to order part# 90891-50149-00. it is an update kit with all parts included to change to the '08 arm/link set-up. also have him install a fan kit #8gj-12405-00-00
