Antifreeze Consumption

I am just wondering if anyone has had similar problems. It's using or losing antifreeze during hard riding. I have to top off the antifreeze reservoir every 200 miles. I have had it to my Yamaha dealer. They have taken it all apart, bled the system, and can't come up with a solution. There seems to be no antifreeze in the oil nor does it steam through the exhaust. The only thing that really happens is that my windshield fogs up.

58flh this was an issue some of us noticed last year as long as you can still see green don't worry about it seems to stay about a 1/4 inch below the low mark once it gets there. I added twice before i read the post on it and since then it's stayed right there. I don't think the reservoir is big enough for the expansion when hot.

58, I had the same "problem" last year I believe. I don't know how much you are losing but my sled would "spit up" some fluids everytime I filled it to the proper level. Try not filling it after a good ride and see if it stays at this level after the next good ride. If it drops again you got issues but I let it get to the level it wanted to be at and havn't had a problem with this since. First ride I saw green on the snow I nearly s*** my pants.

JD: not nessissarily. It depends where the coolant is getting into the engine. If the heater chambers are leaking into the carbs collant will be burned. If the waterpump seal or a crank-case seam seal is leaking, coolant will be lost (and evaporated in the engine).
I think the only way the engine could blow the cooling system apart is if the head gasket was blown.... but I could be wrong.

I thought I was losing my mind. A few weeks ago while getting the sled ready for action I also noticed the low anti-freeze level and remembered that it needed topping off last season. This discussion was very helpful. Thanks.

Re: Over-flow for the Over-flow

The fix : I installed a little plastic container on the end of the over-flow hose an the coolant reservoir….I mounted the small tank just inside the area between your right knee and the chain case….tie wrapped in place….make sure you put a small air hole on the tank…If anyone would like a picture of my remedy let me know I will snap it tomorrow…..Hope this helps…JD

Early RX-1's had too little spring pressure in the cap allowing it to open too soon. New cap for 04.

I'm losing faith in the Yamaha online parts catalogue.... both 03 and 04 rad caps are same part no....22W-12462-00-00

That's the beauty of an online system like the ones Yamaha , A/C , and Polaris use (they are all from EMPART). Change ups can be inserted and made to automatically update the changed part number backwards as far as the administrator specifies.
Users of the system don't even know a chane has been made, and paper parts books and micro fiche are obsolete BUT, you (and your dealer) must be online to get the most accurate info.

I am beginning to think that is the case, if you try and find an exact replacement part for your 03 the part numbers are automatically updated to 04 specs.
Wonder what they do with all the superceeded parts?

I also gave up topping off my coolant some time last year. Now I just look to see that it remains at a constant level, which is just enough to fill the bottom of the reservoir bottle when cold. Are the '04's the same way or are we all talking about '03's here?
