I was thinking about cutting up the stock exhaust to try and cut some weight. I know some have done this, what can you save in weight. What all was removed? Is the stock muffler mad of stainless steel so it can be MIG welded, or should I TIG weld it. What has to be in the exhaust, any baffles, etc? Could it just be a smaller chamber made to fit in the stock location? Could I use a dirt-bike or 4 wheeler type silencer attached to the stock header pipe?

Thanks for any info, Lance

exhaust

Actually, I was thinking about something along those lines, just farther back. Where did you get the snuffers(or whatever you call them)?

Does having a long header pipe have any benefit?

I can't see any pic. What is it about?

Yes it can been done however the benefits are unknown as far as HP gains. Removed seat and unbolted heat shield then took a cut off wheel and opened the top enough to fold back and get in with a torch and cut out baffles and other internals. After gutting the can fold the flap you cut open back down and TIG weld back together. Replace heat shield. It does have a little better sound but like I said I'm not real sure of the advantage vs. the work involved. To the weight advantage you may save two pounds on everything you take out of the can...its not much.
Hope this helps

I just did this mod. In the process of installing 2 cpr turbo kits. Cut off the bottom heat shield, then cut a piece out for access. Cut the whole guts out of the can, then mig it back together. Put the stock one on a bathroom scale 20lbs, the modded one came in at 15lbs, I know its not the best scale, but its what I have.

I weighed all of the guts that I pulled out from the exhaust and it was just under 5 pounds.

I gotted mine, started out with the cutting wheel idea, but took way too much time. Took it to a guy down the road with stainless welding set up and plasma cutter and it took them an hour and 70 bucks. Well worth the time saved with the cutting wheel.

Sounds great. Sound still will disappear at 70 pretty much though.

ONE QUESTION:

Why couldn't any of you who has done this taken pictures? If just one person that is going to do this would take pictures this question could go into the tech section.

Thanks for the great links and info, I bought a stock setup from someone for $20, so I am going to open it up with the plasma cutter and see what I find! Thanks, Lance

Can't take credit for this but I picked up this a while back searching this awesome site when contemplating gutting mine or going with Whiteknuckle. I decided to go with a QC-1 ;)!

Thanks, that is a great pic! Can all of that stuff come out? Could I make the whole canister smaller, and just duct the exhaust out the stock holes?
Thanks
