I have been changing oil & filter every year but thinking maybe I should not change oil at all this year in 2007 Attak GT only 1,200 miles due to poor snow conditions. Using M1 0-30 full syn. What do you think? Will oil degrade or cause any problems?

This is the first year I didn't because I had about the same miles last year. I have also heard that some change their oil every year but filter every other.
It will not cause any problems, are engines aren't that sensitive were 9 month oil will hurt.as long as its not that dirty.

Many will say that it is bad to not change due to contaminats in the oil that sit in the motor during the off season. That being said I have never subcribed to it and many others will say that it will not hurt these engines. After 20 years of no seasonal oil changes on different sportbikes with the same motors as our sleds I have never had a problem.

I leave the filter but change the oil once a year. I think the oil is soo much better these days I wouldn't be afraid to leave it, I just do it to get any water that may of condesned sitting over the summer from high humidity, etc.

Acids and other combustion by-products build up over the course of the year regardless of the amount of miles, that is why companies like Amsoil, who have 25,000 mile OCI's recommend changing it once a year regardless of miles(which ever come first)
Personally imo oil is cheap comparitively so why not dump it and change the filter while your at it?
(I can never figure out why someone would go to the trouble of changing the oil but not change the filter? Do they think the filter is empty of dirty used oil?)

It's a good thing to do...it's cheap and easy and it also gives you an opportunity to look around the sled for anything that's out of sorts.

Yamaha spec 10-12K miles on oil filter & 3500 miles on oil change. I'm starting to change my views on changing oil & filter every year if only 1200 miles. I'm not convinced but thinking about it no use spending money if not necessary.

I do it annually (oil and Yamaha filter) whether it needs it or not. That is just me...............

If it looks clean,or good enough for now i don't change mine- are engines have clean-air going thru>> them .so thats a big plus.i also start my apex twice a month or more,in the off season,so the oil never sits around.engine is perfectly fine, still rips.why spend-it over and over? i change it in the streetbike more often cause i put more miles on,and i wring its next more>more revs same engine clutch debris.everyone wants clean oil but....

unlike other vehicles, snowmobiles do not suck dirt through the air filter,(no air born contaminets, dust, pollen, etc...)
witch is one of the main reasons the oil stays clean so long, and the filters aren't getting clogged up with the dirt either, so you dont need to change it as often.it takes 1500 miles just to get dis-colored.
specially with the synthetics, they don't break down as easy.
also, IMO probably the aluminum block doesn't break down like a cast iron block.
but, like you said, oil is cheap,so it is not going to hurt to change it.

I change the oil every year and change the filter every other year.
