Anyone ever seen this happen?

Luckily, since this sled was going to the dealer for a diagnosis of my oil burning problem, when I changed the oil yesterday I drained the oil into a clean container, and I saved the filter. That oil and filter has been there since near the end of last season, for almost a year and 1500 miles. I'm going to get in touch with my dealer before I touch anything else on the sled.

for the small price it costs to get the oil analysed I would then you have a independent source. Get them to see if the metal in the oil match the metal from the piece that broke off if they match I can see a new engine coming to you.

The problems I see are 1. The sled is off warranty...by over a year. Hopefully with my previous oil complaints that will help. And 2. I took the stator cover apart myself, so that alone would void the warranty even if was still on it...I don't know how they'll react to it, I guess it depends on the dealer and how much they want to go to bat for me. Hopefully they will...we already bought a Raptor from them, and they know we are going to be in the market for a new sled for my wife after we sell this shop, and possible one for me as well. How they handle this will decide whether they are Yamahas or something else. Of course, with the style of the new sleds, mine will have to be the 2-up RS Venture, which, I'd like to point out, should have the 150 engine instead of the 120. But I'll give up the engine for comfort.

Talk to customer releations once you have talked to your dealer and got all your ducks in a row. Get the oil inspection done as that will solidify your claim and point of veiw. You have no warranty that is why you took the stator out. Now that it is out your claim started because of the new evidence whick suggests a defect dating back to when you had warranty.

Well its been a week since I e-mailed pics of the stator and broken bracket to the dealer, and called them in person. I called back as a followup toward the end of last week...Thursday I think. I was told they were waiting to hear from Yamaha. Today I called again, hoping for an update. As it turns out, I was told this time (by the service manager, same person I have been dealing with) that he hasn't even called Yamaha yet because they have been busy! This is starting to sound like my previous dealer experiences...they'll try to help, as long as there is no other business and they are bored. It looks like my season is done before it really started. I have already had to cancel several rides with friends, and now its time to cancel my ride to northern Maine. I was using this case to make my final decision about whether I would be better off jumping ship from Yamaha for my next sled, or give them another chance...its looking like this is my last Yamaha.

Jim, I really think you should take this to my dealer here in Laconia. That would really piss me off when someone tells me they will do something and then a week or two later says that they have done nothing. These guys are very professional and do great work. I would not waste anymore of your time. At least you will get a fair shake with these guys. Give me a call if you need more information, 603.527.0256.

Well I'm going to be patient and give them some more time. I typed my post just after talking to them, so I was still kind of worked up, but considering what they are trying to do for me, I'm going to try to be patient. Considering this is just a good-faith thing, and they don't owe me anything since the sled is off warranty, I need to kiss up to them as much as possible. It was my first 2 dealers that dropped the ball, so at this point I can only cross my fingers and hope something gets done. It just bugs me to see the best snow we've had this season outside my door, and not be able to ride.

I also don't want to keep jumping around to dealers. I have a little bit of a history with this one, after buying my stepson's Raptor there, and all of my parts (which really aren't much though) there over the past year. In fact, since they were convenient when trailering up north when I still lived near Keene, I used to get some of my first season parts there. They always had things in stock that my local dealer would have had to order.

That was something I had forgotten about my original dealer. They didn't keep ANYTHING in stock because they didn't want to tie up money in inventory. Even basic things like carbides, luggage, etc. had to be ordered. In fact, they would have had to order my extra belt that I wanted when I bought my sled, then I talked them into pulling one off the other showroom sled and selling me that one.

At this point, no matter how quickly a dealer were to move, I wouldn't have my sled back in time for any riding before the end of the season...which is quickly aproaching. I'm just getting cabin fever, since I don't have any real summer hobbies to keep me busy, so I was counting on sledding for excitement this winter.

Well I just got off the phone with the dealer, and its definately not looking good. Basically, he said that Yamaha said the stator issue isn't thair problem, so any damage from the metal getting into the motor is on me. Yamaha also said that I probably have mods (turbo, etc.) that affected the oil use...this is a BONE STOCK MOTOR. They wanted to know why they didn't hear about the problem until just before my warranty ran out...I TOLD MY ORIGINAL DEALER AT AROUND THE 500 MILE MARK! They just excused it as normal and never documented it!

They still want to see the sled, so I'm bringing it in ow that they are ready for it, but by the way they are being so defensive, its not looking good. Also, because they won't cover the stator, I'll have to pay them retail (almost $300) for a stator, plus their labor to install it. Damn, I knew I should have bought the one off ebay for $99!!!

I'm really getting tired of this money-sucking P.O.S. If they try to charge me the $300+ for the stator, which I just don't have, I'm going to leave the P.O.S. sled with them...they can have it for all I care at this point.

Jim

You couldn't rewind this one...it didn't burn up, it was ground up by that broken bracket. Not only the wire, but a good chunk of the stator itself was damaged. At this point it doesn't even matter, since the engine is basically junk from being thrown into dirty boxes under a workbench for 8 months.
