i thought i heard/read this posted somewhere. i have googled it to no end and can't find anything....., maybe i'm using the wrong term? anyway, my 14 yr old boy just finished his snowmobile safety course this past saturday. i can't wait to take him sledding! however my secondary sled is an XCSP 600. (a little too much power for a first timer) i thought i heard there was some kind of gadget that attaches between the bars and thumb throttle to limit the amount of gas he can give it..... like a govenor. but much less complicated. anybopdy know of something like this???
thanks in advance,
peter

Electrical tape works!

I had to do this with my son also. I just taped a small piece of wood to the back of the throttle to limit how far he could push it in.

or a hose clamp around the bars, using the fastener as your block

The actual term 'throttle block' applies to the throttle leaver bracket or 'holder'. I have seen some confuse it with the cable splitter used on some older sleds prior to linking the carbs with a shaft to run throttle and oil pump cables. Generally dedicated 'kids' machines will have a set-screw in the throttle block to limit lever play but on a full size sled you will have to improvise as others have suggested. If you really wanted to control the speed you could also shim the secondary clutch to prevent it from opening all the way. You will find that the taped up lever will still allow plenty of RPM (speed) in no load situations or bog out in high load (steep and deep). Be very careful, supervision is the key. cheers cr

my 13 yr old twin girls ride my nytro and vector with no throttle block. I thought about using one but decided to start out by setting some rules. So far they have done very well keeping their speeds down and learning how to ride under control. The key is supervision. Even with training they need to have an adult near by to make sure they don't get out of hand.

maybe try a throttle stop used in drag racing

Thats only because you have girls....
It is best to make the modification where it won't be visible/easy to disable. Carb side is a good place to limit throttle from.

thanks guys, i was thinking of the 'supervising him closely thing'. but man, when you got helmets on and.....i don't know, i just worry about that one 'freak out' where he squezzes the throttle instead of the break and all hell breaks loose. i will try modifying something myself and test it to see how it works.
