I just got a heated sheild and I want to hook it up. all I have is 2 wires a black and a red. I obviously hooked the black to a bolt in the frame then I tried to find something that just came on when the sled was started rather than running the red directly to my battery. I had unhooked my reverse beeper because its anoying so I tried to hook into that but when I plugged in my helmet my sled beeped. so I ran the wire to the fuse for the headlight since that comes on when the sled starts and it blew the fuse in about 15 minutes.
This heated shield dosnt have any sort of an on off switch. Its just a wire that plugs into the helmet and on the far other end it has the two red and black wires. should I just run it to my battery or is it not good to have that wire hot all the time. :exc:

If I remember correctly. Take off your handle bar cover and use any blue wire. Just as a precaution try a light tester before splicing. J
That was funny reading when you plugged in your helmet the sled beeped cracked me up for a bit. Both of my sleds were hooked up to the blue wire with the white stripe under your handle bar pad. Black wire goes to one of the bolts on the steering post. Have not had any problems with fuses or anything and the helmet sheilds both work perfect.
Hook it straight to the battery. Just install an inline fuse. It will work perfect.

thanks for the help guys. I dont know which I will try yet I guess I could go right to the battery but I might look under the handle bar pad and see if I spot the wire you talk about... Thanks again...

DO NOT use the wires under the handlebar pad for your electric sheild. some have, and have fried the ecu on the sled.wire direct to the battery with an inline fuse.

Dumb questions, but I assume the "inline fuse" can be purchased at an auto parts store? What kind of fuse specifically is it?

What are those issues with the ECU? I have mine wired into the hand warmers, maybe not the best place, but hadn't heard anything negative on it.

I wish they would do this bull sh*t for us so we dont have to. I thought thats what we pay so much $$$ for this stuff for. all they need to do is give us a piece of paper that says "hook this wire to this spot and this wire to this spot". But they charge $90 for a shield and skip the R&D....

yes there are problems with hooking heated sheilds to the blue wires under the handle bar pad. 1 it cuts the voltage avlable to one of the handle bar heaters 2 it will blow the reostat in the ecu as its only made for the heaters yanaha has had enuf problems with people doing this that they have even put out a tec bulliten on this.

Just pick one up form the local auto parts store. Look for the smaller of the blade style automotive fuses.
All of my sleds done the same way and not one has given me any grief. The heat sheild work perfect as do both grip warmers and thumb warmers so I dont know what the problem is. I have never heard of a rheostat in a ECU. A rheostat is a turn knob like on a radio.

Both of mine were done like that at a Yamaha dealer. I want to see this bulletin you speak of never heard of it and I just asked my dealer for all bulletins. I have never heard of anyone frying their ecu this way either.

Yeah, and frankly after this many years you would think that something would have happened???
