This may be a question for the suspension section but I wanted to target the RX-1 MOUNTAIN crowd exclusively.
Due to the nature of my local riding area (not my extreme desire to stay on the trails) there isn't nearly as much open country mountain riding as I'd like (heavily treed). Consequently, I end up riding a lot of trails.
I was wondering if anyone had installed straight rate front shock springs on their RX-1 Mountain to help on the trails?
I have several front end setups I try from time to time including: no sway bar, 10mm sway bar with stock 03 links, 10mm bar with longer sway bar links, 11mm bar with short links and 11mm bar with longer links.
I was wondering since I put the 05 mountains skis on my sled now and theoretically narrowed my ski stance after taking off my Simmon's skis if the addition of the straight rate springs may be order to help improve the trail prowness of my sled?

I put the 2.3 straight raite springs on.....not running sway bar any more. The straight rate springs do help a bit...the softness of the stock springs makes you roll a lot. If I were riding trail a lot, I would run the 2.3's with the larger sway bar and the longer links. Good luck.

Thanks TRXSTER. Are the 2.3 rate springs Yamaha springs or an aftermarket springs? I would assume the RX-1 Mountain sleds take different length springs than the short trackers?
What rate are the stock 03 springs?
Thanks

How does one tell if you have the straight rate springs or stockers?
I'm trying to figure out just what is done to the '03 I just bought.

If ur springs have about 4 coils wound tight together at the top u got the stock 03 springs if they are somewhat evenly spaced u got straight Rate hope this helps

That's kinda what I figured, the coils are wound evenly. Woot, looks like another bonus with this sled.
Thanks for the advice.

I got Pioneer Performance..you can order different Kg. In hind sight, I would get stiffer springs for my size and knowing that I won't be running the sway bar it would offset that a bit. Say 2.5 or 2.7's.

I'm a bit confused. Yamaha sells the front suspension springs by N/mm. They have 17, 19 and 21 N/MM.
Maxximum performance sells them by Lbs. they have 130 lbs.
Now you are talking in 2.3, 2.5 and 2.7 something. I sure wish they were all measured the same so one could compare apples to apples.
I feel like I should go by "Clueless in Spokane"

Frostbite be careful with this info. Mtn vs short track is very different.
The '03 RX-1 Mtn models came from factory with 2.6 kg straight rate springs on front (ski). The dual-rate front springs (1.9-3.0) were on the short tracks only in '03. And yes they are different, you shouldn't swap between short track and Mtn front shock springs, shocks are different sizes.
Rear sus springs are more interchangeable but that's a different subject.

You may be right about the shocks being different diameters(I don't know) but the 03' Mountains did come with the dual rate springs, not just the shortys. LB, set us straight would ya?

Oh Man! Now I'm really confused. How about 05 Warrior front shocks? Will they improve an 03 Mountain sled ride or are they a different kind of animal completely?
Let's see I have this so far:
03 RX-1M and 04 Warrior
1.7 8FA-23760-20-00
1.9 8FA-23760-10-00
2.1 8FA-23760-00-00
04 RX-1M
1.7 8CX-23760-00-00
1.9 8CX-23760-10-00
2.1 8CH-23760-40-00
If it's true the 03 moutains came with a 2.6 straight rate spring in 03 I'd be going backwards buying 2.1 straight rate springs. H-E-L-P

Guys, all RX-1 Mountains have used straight rate springs on front since '03. Here's the spring rates by year and model:
'03 RX-1 Mtn: 2.6
'04~'05 RX-1 Mtn: 2.1
'06 Apex Mtn: 2.7
The only model with dual-rate front springs was '03 short track. Starting in '04 all North American RX-1, Warrior and Mountain models have used straight rate springs.
I was wrong about shock diameter though, I went back and checked, short track and Mtn use same shock diameter, just different lengths. Frostbite that means the 8CX and 8CH part numbers won't fit on your shocks at all and the 8FAs are too long.
But that doesn't mean you can't fix your problem. It's hard to have a powder hound and a trail carver all at once, but you should be able to make improvements.
What is your biggest complaint about trail handling? If it's body roll, you're going to have a tough time getting rid of it if you leave the sway bar off. If you're looking to turn better on the trails, you've already made a big improvement with the '05 Mtn skis, they're a deep keel design and pretty aggressive in trail conditions. Please be more specific and we can help you better.
And contact Bruce Schrader at Pioneer Performance, he's excellent with Yamaha suspension AND customer service, he'll steer you right (sorry for that pun) and he'll stick with you after the sale to make sure you're happy.
