All this talk about trying to fix starting issues and starter failure by adding this or changing that....just curious if anyone who has the Evo flash is still experiencing starter/starting issues? Seems to me that everyone with the Evo flash has no issues. If the Evo flash fixes everything, then why are we exploring all these other avenues?

One issue of concern with EVO flash is potential for warranty void. I have three years of YES left and want warranty coverage if there is an engine problem. Flash requires that the ECU be split in half and sealed back up. No way Yamaha isn't going to know that it's been modified. Not saying that warranty would be voided depending on what failed, but the potential for it is there.

Would be better if Yamaha could just fix the problem.

Right, I guess what I'm getting at, is that if Evo can fix the starting issue with a flash, then yamaha should be able to as well. We keep looking for solutions, blaming this or that or "crappy ecu" but yet evo makes the crappy ecu work just fine.

Goes back to whether it's Yamaha trying to fix Cat ECU or Cat trying to figure out mapping for the 1050. EVO has worked with Yamaha mapping on the 1050 for years, and I suspect has experience with its good and bad. Not sure how familiar Cat is with it. Maybe it's a problem with Yamaha not providing their mapping to Cat, and Cat not having experience with the 1050 motor. Regardless, it will take both working together to solve the problem and it doesn't seem like that has happened yet.

I know one thing for certain, my wife's 2016 Vector with the same engine, but Yamaha Electronics and mapping starts instantly at the turn of the key all the time, and idles as smooth as silk. Its amazing how different the same engine can run.

I have the EVO stage 2/premium fuel re-flash. Fires right up with no kick back, runs good and throttle response is improved over stock.

Just curious, Did you experience any problems before the EVO flash? The engine start problem has been very inconsistent so if the problem wasn't present before yours was flashed then it's hard to say it improved or corrected a startup issue.

I did have kick back a few times. Sorry I don't remember if it was with the original 2014 flash or the 2015 re-flash that came out for the hot start issue. (I did have the hot start issue with the original 2014 flash)
It's worth noting that I also run a Lithium battery. Lithium batteries have approx 1 volt higher free standing voltage (fully charged) when compared to a lead/acid battery. I've had the Lithium battery in the sled since day one, so it is an apples to apples comparison so speak.

Yamaha has released a new flash this fall, came out a month ago, or so. All Viper owners in Scandinavia received a letter from Yamaha highly recommending to reflash their sleds before they use the sleds this winter.

I've done mine but haven't ridden it enough this winter yet to say whether it fixes any issues but my dealer said they have tested it and works fine. I've never had any kickback issues on mine, but it seamed to start up easier.

My dealer told that the people responsible for the ECU at Cat were sent to Mitsubishi in Japan by Yamaha to learn how to program the ECU for the 4-stroke engine as they had no clue...

I have asked NosPro this question and he and I are awaiting a response from Jim at EVO. Right now I am afraid the Viper owners have lost aftermarket priority to Sidewinder but expecting a response from Evo soon.

After reading what many have posted describing what a "kick-back" is, I don't think I ever had one. I do however have an inconsistent idle, low rpm burble and hot start issue. I went with the EVO stage 1 (all stock) 91 octane flash to try and resolve this. EVO was upfront with me, that although it would perform better, it might not fix those issues. After 1 trip, I have to say, I don't think it changed much if any. I'm waiting for more seat time to see if the plug fouling thing is any better.

I'm saying; don't hold your breath that the EVO tune is an "end all" fix for these sleds. There are other things going on in the total package, than just a bad tune.

DT, often have poor idling? Have you tried to change some of the relays in the fusebox? Grizztracks have shown that many critical components make their power supplies through the ISC relay? A cheap and easy way to test something?

Janne, I've never changed any relays or familiar with this logic. Are you saying Idle Speed Control relay could be faulty causing idling issues?

Mine had terrible kick backs broke the starter and ruined the stator.

I got the evo flash last season put on 2500 km and I had no kick backs. So it must help.

Good to know! My warranty is done end of January. I swore I wasn't going to modify this sled, but an Evo flash might be coming! I know some have had starter issues taken care of after Warranty was up, but I'm not sure I want to roll the dice...
