I can tell you 3 things that I did to my 07 attak that killed my top end but gave me much better bottom and mid.
1. put on a cobra track 1.3 inch lug
2. installed wahl extros
3. installed ulmers clutch kit
IMO, probably the biggest top end killer of these was the cobra, but also was the biggest holeshot improver.

My experience was similar to sledog's. I'm on my third clutch kit now and none have been anywhere near as fast top end as the stock weights. Big gains elsewhere, but a loss on top.

Ya it seems the consensus is that "clutch kits" do nothing for top end & sometimes loose but gain bigtime from bottom to mid range!
Seems odd that the cobra 1.3 would hinder your top end, thought those were fast tracks?

Good point about making swap without putting out extra cash! I was figuring on buying a 07 Attak for around 6 grand & selling mine for around the same but here in "OVER TAXED" Ontario, Canada, we have to pay 13 fricken percent tax on used sleds which would work out to an extra $780!!!!!!!!!!!!nate007 said:Often times it is, but as with anything, some always run better than others..
The attack has a smaller top gear in the gear case by one tooth (I believe just one?), and it seems to let it rev a little more.
If you're happy with the sled you have, I'd mod that instead of selling and buying another, unless you can make the swap without extra cash?
I found a Attack suspension I might deal on, buy a new track & sell my track & CK skid....prob won't get much for that because I don't think anyone wants those, lol!!!
Before I get into this, would the Attak skid bolt right into my sled, original mounting holes?

The Attack is plain and simply quicker then an older Apex. It accelerates way faster. The Apex may beat it on the top end, but it will take 2000feet to get it done.

From what I've seen firsthand, the Apex will not even topend the Attak. All things equal the Attak drives away and stays out front, even down a hardpack very long road for miles.

I just bought an 06 Attak and was considering dropping one tooth on top gear. Should I leave alone? I prefer acceleration over top end and have always regeared my sleds. I also have Heavy Hitter weights but see no posts of anyone using these and it appears that Attak stock clutching is pretty good. Would it be worth getting the Ulmer kit or any other kit worth the $$$ ?

Leave it be I say. It really does work well.
If you want accel, then ulmers is good....but you will loose some top end.dmaxx said:I just bought an 06 Attak and was considering dropping one tooth on top gear. Should I leave alone? How much top end loss? 3-4 mph would not hurt as we ride trails, hardly ever on a lake. Any benefit with different helix or springs?
Yes, probably 2-4 mph loss. I know that ulmers kit has different springs and weights, and helix, but I have no idea of the specs. He also sells a stage 2 that changes the gearing.

My loss on top was more like 5 - 10 mph, and was universal with each clutch kit, just happened.
It was the down low and midrange where gains fluctuated a lot, depending on the kit. HC 2 Speeds have given me the best gains.

Stock clutching is really good... You can adjust the weights, but it is a pain , but it does wake it up and if you re-work the helix, you will benefit from it... 2 speeds really help on it, but again you will lose some top end from it. You won't lose 5-10mph as some alutted to, but 2-4mph is typical loss on top end with a clutch kit. Acceleration will change. I also hear dropping 1 tooth on an Attack really wakes it up along with clutching changes..

My friend's dad crashed his Arctic Cat a couple of years ago and last season he purchased an 07 Apex Attak. He is faster than all of us out of the hole and on top end. We have one rider on an 08 LTX and he doesnt have the speed that the older Attak has.
Now his dad can get into the trees even faster!!!!
