When I get off the sled, the rear suspension does not return to the top of its travel, it falls short by 2"-3". My buddy's RTX returns to within 1". I have the stock, non fat boy spring, preload's @ #6, RA is 5 clicks to the hard:
Anyone else notice this?
Is this normal?
If not, any ideas of what's wrong?
Much obliged, guys.

There should be certain amount of "free-sag". Sag from sled only with no rider. If you had none you would beat the shock to death. I have not heard from Yamaha or here, of a "free sag" measurement. A rule of thumb we use for rear of motocrossers is 25 to 35 mm of free sag. If less than 25 mm you need heavier spring is needed, if more than 35 mm a lighter spring.

I don't have a mono suspension, but when I had the pro action it was normal. I would suspect it is normal on the mono also. When you sit on it and depress it, and then get off, it doesn't return all the way. If you bounce it or lift the back of the sled up it will return. Then it will stay until you sit on it again. My M-10 and Expert-X don't do it near as much, but I think it is normal on the Yamaha skids.

You should have ride-in sag when you sit on the sled, typically about 2-3 inches. But mine have always returned to top when I get off the sled, unless I have big time ice build-up.
Does it drop another couple inches when you sit on it , making the total drop 4 to 5 inches ?

Yes indeed, when I sit on the sled, the rear skid drops another couple/three inches, I'm guessing my sit-in sag is somewhere between 4" - 6".
I'll be moving the c-clip & going to #7 on the preload, we'll see if that reduces the "self sag".
