For anyone that's done it, is it necessary to change clutch weights, springs or gears from the stock set-up in order to do a leisurely ride out west (elevation up to 10 or 11 grand, but averaging around 7 grand)?

I'm not really interested in the superb performance I'd expect on "the guys ride" in Ontario, but rather will be riding with the wife and son just fart'n around on the trails they have out in Colorado. I really don't want to change much for just a week of riding if I can expect somewhat decent performance, but would if anyone's tried it and noticed a significant fall on its face kind of ride.

Would the sled be a dog, or will it adequately perform and at least keep us in the game?

Anyone's help in this matter is appreciated.

Thanks,
Jon

I have an 06 attack. I have been to Laramie,Wy twice and Togwotee once. The first time in Laramie I replaced the rivets in the weights. and I think I put in a new spring based on the dealers recommendations for 10,000 ft. The sled ran good. I could beat an 800 skidoo renegade on the trails but would not in powder. If you ride trails or places where others have been you will do fine but if you ride untracked powder it better be going down hill.

I hope this helps

You will be 1000 to 1400 RPM's below your maximum RPM's. I would recommend removing all rivets from your weights. This is the only change needed to be very close to normal operation.

I was in wyoming last year with my apex gt..

Removed all the rivets from the weights and reinstall and you will be set to go..

we rode from 8500 feet all the way to over 11,000 feet and the sled rode spot on.. with stock gearing

Thanks guys. I've not messed with the clutch too much. If I remove the rivets from the weights, are those drilled out and obviously not reusable?

Thanks,
Jon

I am not sure but I think you drve them out because drilling might change the bore of the hole and lessen wt in uncontrolled fashion, and future wts may not fit well.

We can both waith and see from guys who do this all the time.

I have replace/removed/changed rivets in stock Yamaha weights a skazillion times. The rivets are softer material then the weights. I have never ever damaged a weight by drilling out the rivets. Try grinding down the rivet 1st & then just punching it out manually or use a hydraulic press & press it out. Just drilling em out is a lot harder but it works & you won,t damage the weight.

I have taken an Attac out there 2 differant times, and I did NOTHING but put in gas and ride. You will be fine.

its the easiest if you use a bench vise and carefully drill the head of the rivet off and using a punch knock out the rivet..

You can go to the dealer and get new rivets, simply push them back in and using a hammer carefully smash the other end (so as to keep them in place)

I rode the CDT last year and from there I also rode up to West Yellowstone. Didn't do anything to the Apex or RS Venture and couldn't tell a difference in performance in either sled.

Thanks for the replies. I haven't decided what to do yet, but it's definitely good to know that I can be lazy and leave it alone and still have decent performance.

The West

Jon,

You are lazy, that's what we like about you.... Are you going to be at the Air Show this weekend, if so bring your family to our home and we'll sit up on the large gated estates pool for the first Blue Angels show before we head off to the lake for the weekend.

At 2500' elevation the rpm,s on my Attak dropped to 9000 rpm in deep powder with no rivets removed. At 8-10k it will be way worse. If stock clutching worked that bad at low elevation it would be a disaster at higher elevation in real deep off trail powder. Do not drive it at high elevations with the stock rivets in the weights if you plan on going off trail!
