If you decide to clean your clutches be sure to never use any petroleum based cleaning product. Soap and water is the safest bet.

There is just a slight amount of black on the primary from the belt that I will wipe off.

If I had enough snow to actually ride, would the belt end up in the right position by the design of the clutches?

Mine started to goo the primary as well just loading and then unloading.

I put the Ulmer kit/machined clutches and the 8DN belt on and it's been fine ever since. I have the brand new 8JP takeoff as a spare, but I'm considering not using it and keeping a new 8DN for spare.

As for belt position, it is best to roll the track on a sled stand a bit to get the belt properly centered and shifted back.

To get the belt back in proper position after installing it simply grab the belt and spin it backwards, it should slide in the clutches, half a spin clockwise of the belt and the secondary should close right up and belt will sit where it needs to be.

this is a very good video. the belt change is a nytro but that is the same motor we have in the viper. only difference is the belt guard comes off on the nytro and not the viper. this isnt my video either.

Think of it like gearing on bicycle......1st gear has chain on small sprocket up front...large sprocket on rear. On the snowmobile the belt is low on front clutch and high on the secondary. As you go faster the belt rides higher in clutch and lower in secondary.

Also be aware if you use the brake hard in an emergency situation...the secondary isn't rolling...so the belt doesn't return to the top....like starting off in 3rd gear. As others have said, keep your clutch and secondary clean.

Of course there are springs and weights that make this all work....but that's the basic over simplified way it works.

Wonder why the belt guard isn't easily removable like other sleds. Would definitely make this little task much easier.

I took the belt back off, cleaned belt, primary and secondary pillows and put the belt back on. Now the belt is up to within about an 1/8 in of the edge of secondary all the way around. Should be good now. The little bit of black from the belt wiped right of with a little soapy water and my wife's dish scrubber thing. Sorry babe, used it for the greater good! Lol Was all out of grey scotch brites.

On another note I went to check oil and chai case oil level (just wanted to be familiar with location). And the manual said for engine oil, remove rt side cover and use sight glass. Well there is no sight glass for a 2015 viper DX RTX. They have a dip stick attached to the fill cap. Manual is wrong. The Chain case has a sight glass, it is visible from the pocket where your right foot goes.

Next to impossible to ruin a 8DN belt but you can flat spot it (goes thump thump as you ride). I burned our first 8JP belt trying to load the sled on the sled deck....lol

Good to know. I thought it was just me. Could not believe the belt was smoking just loading it on a trailer. Hell I was almost to the point where the trailer bed tips down.

you are correct on the oil. the 15's have a dipstick and us with 14's have a site glass. as for the chain case there is also a site glass as you mentioned already. that should be about half way up the glass. remember after riding the oil will be on the chain and gears and might look empty. let is sit a few minutes and check it again as the oil will run back down to the bottom near the site glass.
