Belt slipping in the primary clutch

Back in 06/07 had slippage at low speed, especially while doing trail work. So much so that the primary would get very hot, to hot to touch. I would carry a paint stick with 400 grit stapled on to remove glaze while doing club trail work. Moved secondary spring from stock 3/3 = 60 to 1/6 = 70. Didn't help much. Changed from Yamaha 8DN to Ultimax Pro belt and have never had slippage since.
8DN belts will last forever, but are just too hard, will even grove/wear the clutch faces.

Yamaha now has the 8DN*****-01 belts, what's the difference now between it and the older -00 belt?

Ive tried changing to 3-3 now and it still slips, ive also checked the weights and rollers and they seem fine (rolling and lifts easy).

I would like to try changing my belt since the two belts ive been slipping on has been Gates belt one Gates Trail and one Gates Extreme. Im thinking maybe the 8DN wont slip as much.

I didn't even think to ask if you were using an aftermarket belt. Try the correct Yamaha belt and let us know what happens.

I got the snowmobile this year, my sisters boyfriend had it before me but he has only done some trail-riding so he said he never heard or felt any belt-slip. He mounted a new belt before i got it and that was a Gates Trail-Rider, and that belt held one trip with some more aggresive deep snow riding.

But the next trip it started to slip almost directly, unfortunately i was 100km from the nearest snowmobile shop so i had to buy a new belt at the nearest gas station and they only had gates, but this time i bought a Gates Extreme thinking it would last longer but it started to slip instantly. So i slowed down and just cruised home so i could save the belt and money from being a total waste.

Im still using this Gates Extreme belt, do you think it might have gone bad from the slipping that has happened so far? It hasnt been much since i have slowed down as soon as i feel the belt slipping.

Maybe I missed this...but why do you think the belt slips?

Does the primary have black rings on it from the rubber?

Does the clutch perform as it should? You still pull max rpm (10500 or so)?

Also, please post a picture of your apex WARRIOR....I wanna see the decals!!!!!

Thanks

Try the Yamaha belt. I'll bet that it fixes the problem as you have now checked most everything else.

did you just buy this sled? When did it start to do this?

Thanks Blue Dave. ;)!

I changed to a brand new OEM Yamaha belt yesterday and today i went for a ride. I was driving around quite calmly to break in the belt, and everything was fun and games until i got lost and had to drive on a _very_ small _very_ bad trail. I was driving around 5-8 MPH when my belt started slipping out of nowhere.

So i removed the hood and belt cover and noticed the primary sheaves were so hot that they were melting the belt. I had to put on my reserve belt just to get anywhere. Well i got loose and drove away with my belt slipping now and then but then i got to a bigger trail so i could increase my speed to like 25MPH and after a few second there were no more slip.

Is the sheaves suppose to run that hot?
Maybe the alignment is wrong? If so maybe that can also explain why it slips on full throttle in heavier snow.
Motor mounts? How do i check them?

Best regards
Jeppe

The sheaves should not be that hot. You really should check clutch alignment, this thread will probably help you out http://ty4stroke.com/viewtopic.php?t=31333 To check motor mounts you can remove some of the body work and look at them or try setting the parking brake and giving the sled some throttle. Watch the motor for movement.

You said the weights and rollers were good. Did you pull the primary apart and check the movement of the sliding sheave? As another already posted it would be a good idea to take the spring out of the primary and make sure that the sheave and everything moves smoothly.

Yep I had it apart and moved the sheave and I dont think it get stuck or anything, I could move it up and down the shaft with one finger.

I've read up on that post and maybe ill check the motor mounts but I dont know were to look for them, maybe i can see them if I remove the air intake.

I'm thinking that the alignment center-to-center might be of and therefor causing my clutches to get hot?

Sounds like the secondary is not shifting properly. have you checked the three buttons on the secondary? could one be missing?
