Last weekend I hit an ice heave on the river at .. well lets say a good pace. I had a yard sale of parts scattered down the ice over 100 yards.
I did not get a good opportunity to look the sled over before dropping it off at the dealer.
One week later, they tell me its totaled because the frame is bent.
How do I check to see if or how bad it is bent? I did not notice anything visibly bad. The tunnel and foot rails are a little bent. But again nothing that would prevent me from ridding the sled.

IIUC, the tunnel is the frame, and I would certainly think that even "a little bent" is very, very bad. They're looking at the cost of returning it to new, which apparently means putting a new tunnel on. I'm therefore guessing that when they say totalled, they mean that the cost of repairing the sled exceeds its value. That's not their judgment to make, however, it's the insurance company's.

Definitely totalled but you can straighten it enough to ride it and have a sled you don't have to worry about every nick and ding. Depends on you. Good thing you're OK.
Buy it back and ride it or keep for a spare. Always make a good conversation peice!

If they write it off, buy it back for sure. You can always part it out and make some good doh!

They told you its totaled because they want to sell you a new one rather than fixing that one. Its really not that badly broken up.
Regarding the "bent frame"... the only thing on the sled that could really be considered a frame is the stuff that goes around and above the engine, which could actually be bent, but I doubt it. None of that is showing in your pictures. Regarding the tunnel being bent... you can straighten it easy enough, or you can consider this your best opportunity to upgrade the crap out of the thing.... First, rip off everything on the whole sled thats broken and/or in the way of properly assessing the damage. Figure out what NEEDS to be fixed, then start looking into what you'd LIKE to fix and/or upgrade.
Definitely make sure that you KNOW what you need to do with it BEFORE you start spending money on it.

Buy it back, straighten it out with a hammer and ride the crap out of it....I bought my CBR 900 RR back from the insurance co many years ago for $300 bucks after they paid me $7500. A few tubes of fuzer, a set of forks and bars and some paint and I still own her years later...
