I'm replacing my egine oil on my Phaser GT for the first time. Manual calls for 0W-30 SAE. I want to use a synthetic oil - thinking of Amsoil 0W-40 or Amsoil Series 2000 Synthetic 0W-30. Which is best??
Also, this is my 1st oil change (700kms on sled) - should I also replace the oil filter??

If there is one time you must change the oil filter, it's on the first oil change. It will be full of all kinds of shavings and specks of metal from break-in. After that you can go a couple of oil changes on one filter, if you want, without worrying too much. Just change both at least once a year.

Oil filter change is every 12,000 miles, which is next to never
I wouldn't bother changing it every year. A 4-stroke snowmobile engine operates in a fairly clean environment and a slightly used filter has more effective filtration than a brand new one.
You can cut open your second filter and see how it looks inside. If it's not dirty you know you can run the next filter much longer.
I won't change my filter for another couple of years. Especially if oil change is done every year. The oil will never get old, dirty and "used" in these machines.

I drain and use the Mobil 1 5-30 (from the sleds) in my old neon..lol. It's still great looking after a season. Neons got 140000 miles on and uses no oil, used or otherwise.

srxboy,
Please take a moment to update your profile with your location as this is a site requirement.
Thank you.
Now, about the oil.......
If you use the search option, you'll find enough reading to keep you busy for the entire season. This topic has been beat to death and argued over, and over.....and over. lol
My best advice would be to read the threads already on the board here and decide for yourself which is best. You'll get so many different responses from different people.

I use Amsoil OW-40 and my phazer runs awsome. We switched all my family's machines to synthetic oil and the 2-strokes run cleaner and for longer on Amsoil and the 4-strokes run much cleaner. I would recomend Amsoil OW-40.

Along with 1Crazy, I would also take out the screen on the oil tank, as there has been foreign material on the outside of the screen. 1 hose clamp, and 2 allen bolts.
(I believe all 4 strokes have this screen in the tank.)

Why you would you run a non-recommended viscosity when 0w30 is commonly available? even from Amsoil. That oil was designed to meet the specs of the other three manufacturers. Any 0W30 is probably better simply because it meets Yamaha's specs. This is grounds for warranty denial.
