Here's the story, I'm running 1.325's 96 up the middle; I ended up hitting something in the lake, shrugged it off, after almost getting jolted off. Drove about 4 miles til the end of the lake, where the coolant light came on (which seemed strange as the lake had about 4-6" fluff snow). Looked under the sled saw no green coming from the exchanger (quick look). Packed the running boards with snow b4 we exited the lake, light went off a little later, driving for about 2 miles on road/snow (25-30mph), we entered a trail where I rode for another mile, bang the caution light came on, at idle the engine shut off. SOME of the snow was melted on the running boards, I added more fluff, started her up seconds later, rode another 1/2 mile up a steep hill, come to an intersection and it shut down automatically. At that time it was smoking from the engine, where my brother came over, and said that the exhaust had smoke coming from it since the lake. He then checked the hoses going to the thermostat which were cold/empty. Then checked the side runners which were cold, which still had snow on the running boards. (towed it home from there thinking it was a thermostat 33 degree day) Long story short, a stud went through the exchanger, leaking all the coolant.

Soo, now it wont start, unless I give it a little throttle, then it sounds like its loping, and then shuts off (within 10 seconds). Synthetic oil changed within 20 miles of this ride, and smells burnt. 2,000 miles on the machine..

Whats your thoughts? :exc:

same happened to me... but... i noticed and had coolant/water that i kept adding... but i had no smoke... there's a very good chance you damaged motor. expecially if all hoses/rads were cold and engine hot. these things at idle have a high temp shutoff.... it is the engine protecting itself if you let it idle and over heat. it will shut down. It can be overrun tho, if you restart and throttle.....

I had a buddy do the same, but he seized his motor solid... it was brand new in 08, and when he left the truck within a mile he thru a stud... but didn't notice... hard on the throttle.. 27 miles in BOOM... it ended up melting to coils to the motor, burnt all oilines etc... bad day... yamaha ended up comming good, because it only had 27 miles, and dealer did the stud job....

Might have some tight bearings if it got too hot. I'd pull plugs and then rotate motor by hand by turning clutch to see if it is smooth or if there are some tight spots.

Haven't thought about turning the engine by hand. No compression test yet, I'll prob do the leak down test soon.

Have no fear.. Iv'e seen this scenerio many times..RX-1 and Apex.
Severe overheat due to coolant loss. Ya fear the worst.
Take it to a reputable sled or bike shop and ask to have a head gasket installed, get the exchanger patched (tigged) and get the oil & filter changed. Then you're back in business. Or do it yourself if you are techy and can follow a manual, plus there are lots of guys here that can guide you and help out. It's not rocket science, but you have to follow some rules.
It's a tough mill. I've serviced a few that have melted the COP's to the point that the sled lost ignition ( maybe that's why you have the described "lope") and dissolved the oil senser in the sump tank, related plastic parts.
After a fresh head new gasket.. it's all good.
All I'm saying is that it's not as bad as you think.. good luck
