Only 1 thing to do now!!! Carillo rods, wiseco pistons, new block, head work, add the upgraded fuel pump, quickspool waste gate, 4th injector and gems controller for it and go to 12#'s baby

by the way mine puked oil on several occasions at 6#'s of boost and has never done it since at 12#'s. and they did the same not covered warranty dance when mine went down. It also notched a hole in the block you may get lucky there and not need the $2,400.00 block (may be sleevable). I can buy a block for my muscle cars cheaper than this 3 holer.

every turbo kit should be mandatory to come with extra injectors in the intercooler. Sure it may be more money up front but if it saves an engine job its well worth the money. The stock injectors cannot keep up at low elevation and long pulls in my opinion.

It emptied the oil tank on warm up. Was drain froze for oil seperator both times was after leaving it over night then starting it.Charlie, we don't even bother holding it wot for the whole run, I just lay on it when coming up to the radar gun, things come at you pretty quick at 136mph, and I can hit that in 1320' with good traction. I would probably not want to hold mine at wot across a lake (depends on the length of the lake) but I would hold it for too long. That being said, I would never run a boosted sled without gauges a I had the same thing happen with a brand new Apex bought turn key from reputable performance shop in the USA and he blamed the detonation on poor fuel (which was not). When we tore things down we found out how poor the workmanship was and that the waste gate was hitting the gas tank and therefore was running 18psi boost as oppose to 10psi that it was set for. I could go on but, in the end it ended up costing me a pile of money and all I can say is that this shop won't see another $ out of me.
Rev-it, I have no experience with the new Vipers or their boost kits, but I noticed you said in your first post, "Emptied the oil tank twice", what do you mean by that, was it pushing oil? If so, then that may have been the precursor to your problems. It wouldn't take long to burn things down with no oil. It sounds like you have gauges as you stated 5psi boost later in the thread. I'm no judge here, but I think your dealer should be backing you up and Yamaha should probably cover this at least for PR reasons. They should seriously look at it and give you a good reason not to cover it. 500 miles is not a lot.
Fuel line feeds cylinder that leaned out first.
Drove 45-55 miles before it went. Was in shop getting seperator changed for the oil issue.
List of parts is sent to Yamaha crank and rods are fine. Block and piston not so much.

Yep be very careful with your Yami endorsed turbo, its a bomb waiting for you to squeeze the flipper. Its a turbo on the cheap, you get what you pay for! If you going to turbo do it right! No fail safes in that system whatsoever. Pure short haul drag racer but a dud on the lake. IMHO

Back up sled AC M7
I believe it's all in who sets it up. I have an awesome dealer who is vary knowledgeable on the boosted nytro engine and has been running them for years. Im confident in this "cheap" turboYep be very careful with your Yami endorsed turbo, its a bomb waiting for you to squeeze the flipper. Its a turbo on the cheap, you get what you pay for! Comments like this make no sense.... It's a bomb waiting to happen ?Yep be very careful with your Yami endorsed turbo, its a bomb waiting for you to squeeze the flipper. There's no fail safes in the sled ? You mean a knock sensor ? No there's not... I don't know of any turbo that adds one either. And the turbo kit, I don't care what brand does not make the sled a short haul drag racer or a lake dud . It's a power adder. It's up to you to tune the sled to either run on the top end or the short side via gearing, clutching, final drive.
The mpi trail is an entry level turbo kit that is SAFE if ram inside the parameter it was designed for. You'll need to verify things are running correctly (afr, boost, fuel controller, and even clutching). The kit has proven to be reliable in the past on the Nytro. The fact of the matter is if your not into tuning the sled than this is not the turbo for you, but don't go around saying it is a bomb waiting to go off. That's bull #*$&@.
And I don't care what turbo you run but I've seen 3 different manufacturers turbos you cannot tell me that the mpi turbo is not top notch in the fit and finish. And if the FACT that Yamaha has chosen mpi to deliver these turbo kits after all the testing and research they have done doesn't say something about the quality of the kit your mistaken.
I'm totally ok with the kit, and you cannot seriously expect Yamaha to cover failures derived from people thinking they can push the limits of what this motor can handle for boost. You know if they did everyone would be running 250hp and when it blew up just crank the boost back down lol. If it's set up properly it will not blow up, if it does fail and it's not directly related to the turbo or it's settings it will be covered under warranty. I don't know why the op of this post isn't fighting for this ...I would have proof to my rep that something is wrong here and I would get answers either way.

Hmmm...... you should research why MPI moved the plastic parts containing liquid away from the turbo. Then ask why no other turbo vendors I know of have done the same. Just out of curiosity how many boosted sleds have you owned and what brands?

Sasquatch, I am shocked that a man of your intelligence would make such a statement. I truly believe there are other factors at play here that lead to your brothers misfortune. What these factors are I cannot and will not say without examining every aspect of the situation for myself. I will say I now have over 300k of testing on a TRAIL KIT WITH EBC and found that the kit is working exactly as intended.

Well Brian I shocked at your reply as well! Maybe my intelligence is not up to your standards. I'm just full of surprises am I not? Now I could say things at this point as well but promises made I'll hold my tongue. I hope your testing improves the Catamaha turbo experience for all!
Anything that can not be pinned and held open is a time bomb waiting to explode. The main reason I left two strokes behind long ago. Tick Tick Tick!
To me IMHO (and be hanged if no one like my opinion) a turbo puts the motor on the ragged edge or closer to it like all the two strokes now and before. Pin it and hold it at your own risk. Great short haul drag racer but a lake racer its not. If that opinion pisses you and everyone else off then I'll live with it. I'll stick to NA Apex power and run em down on the lake! I'm to fat to drag race! I shudder when people call for a turbo Apex. Please no!
And Brian you said you where going to play it safe and stick to 4pds boost max but say Yami says 5 pds max. To bad my Brother had not got the same advice! Blame the dealer, blame Yamaha, Blame him. I never once blamed MPI! But I'll bet with this thread people are getting it now! I would not install a kit that does not come with everything you need to be safe in the kit Its Yamaha rep on the line, its as you even admitted a bare bones kit. Yamaha is selling a bare bones kit, not a complete kit they leave the rest to the dealer and buyer. Way to many places for ship to happen!
Want to impress me Yamaha Let Brain test it and come up with a kit to those standard installed by the dealer and when the dealer screws up back the customer! Sounds like MPI does! Till then I'll stand by my time bomb unless you do it right statement! I don't see anything in there that was wrong.
